Book Reviews of Nikon D700 Digital Field Guide

Book Review: Not very informative
Summary: 2 Stars

If you have (and have read the D700 manual), don't get this book. Three quarters of it is just a regurgitation of the manual with some pretty pictures. I bought this for the 'field guide' part, and it's very barebones (both length wise and density of information). I was particularly disappointed with the level of information about using off camera flashes - this book didn't even mention the fact that the on the body flash has to fire to trigger wireless CLS flashes. That's just an example of a reason why I wanted to buy a quick reference, rather than spend time mining the information off the internet.

I picked up a copy of the Magic Lantern D700 guide in my local BN, and it blows this book out of the water in terms of information usefulness. Get that one instead.

Book Review: Wish there are more tips than just general knowledge
Summary: 3 Stars

I like the layout of this book, it provides a good overview of D700 as well as some additional knowledge about digital photography in general which is great. However, I am also looking for some in depth tips and recommendation about the practical use of the D700 (custom settings, pros and cons on different examples and settings), but found myself a bit disapponted about that. If you are looking for how D700 setting works, this is a good book for reference, but if you are looking for more practical examples, you may be a bit disappointed. I had to buy a Japanese professional photographer guides on the D700 as a supplemental (it also compare D700 settings to D3 and D300) from Taiwan and use along side with this book and got most of information I need about D700 this way.

Book Review: Good D700 tips & More
Summary: 4 Stars

A well written explanation of the many functions of the camera. And serves as a good supplement to the Nikon Users Manual. In addition to the function explanations I found both the authors tips very useful and the additional general information about how the sensors work, lighting, and the authors tips on the various lenses worth the read.
I tried to put one of the tips to work and found the "how to" incomplete so I e-mailed the author and was quite surprised to get a prompt reply with the solution.
Worth the initial read and I have referred back the the Field Guide more than I have to the Nikon users manual.
Well worth the $$.

Book Review: Better than the Nikon Manual
Summary: 5 Stars

While, perhaps, not as extensive as the manual, this is MUCH easier to read, refer to, and SEE illustrations, and more "real speak" than the official Nikon manual. I bought this (cheaply on Amazon) to determine if I really want to upgrade to the D700. As of now I do, but am awaiting the ?successor to the D700, still not announced nearly 18 months+ from the introduction of the D700. Today is 10-18-09. I certainly recommend this series of books to supplement, if not replace, the official manual. I also bought the book for the Nikon D200 after buying the camera. I also recommend any books on photography by Scott Kelby.

Book Review: Not what I had hoped for
Summary: 2 Stars

Half of this book is a color version of the owners manual with a slightly easier to understand explanation of the D700's functions. The second half of the book has nothing to do with the D700. There are no in-depth explanations on how to do anything and that's what I was looking for. The Nikon D700 is a complex piece of equipment with incredible detail and hundreds of options for customizing the camera to facilitate your personal shooting style. This book won't help you learn or understand how to do any of these things.
