Book Reviews of Nikon D90 For DummiesBook Review: Easier Read Than the Manual Summary: 5 Stars
When I was thinking of what to say in this review, it occurred to me that reading "Nikon D90 for Dummies" was like having a friend walk you through what the camera does -- and then I read similar comments by another reviewer.
When I was looking for a book to help me understand the D90 and all it could do, I narrowed my choices down to Julie Adair King's (JAK) book and Ben Long's "The D90 Companion." I have no regrets in buying either one.
JAK's book is well written and very well illustrated. Some may find the continual references to other sections repetitious, but those cross references are most helpful when you use the book as a reference. "... for Dummies'" scope is limited to what the D90 does and how the user activates the various functions. JAK has written other books on photography which presumably pick up where this book leaves off.
I'd recommend reading this book with your D90 close at hand. Try what she says on YOUR D90. And of course practice! As we all know, all your pictures except the first one are free.
Book Review: Nikon D90 for Dummies Summary: 1 Stars
There are several inaccuracies in, "Nikon D90 for Dummies", and numerous pages of generalized information that could be applied to almost any of Nikon's digital SLR bodies. Menu subjects such as "Picture Control" for the D90, and sub menu topics important to me like, "sharpening", are given superficial coverage. Quoting Mr King, "Standard settings are just ducky for me." Well, that is not very useful information! This book was written as an afterthought, in my opinion; just something to get out the door because your publisher is breathing down your back. If you only want to know things like how to turn the camera on, and where the buttons are, this book will do. I would recommend instead David Busch's Nikon D90 Guide to Digital SLR Photography. It's much more comprehensive and informative.
Book Review: NOW I get it! Summary: 5 Stars
I recently upgraded to the Nikon D90 will full knowledge that I was making a commitment to learning about a camera that offered more features, more flexibility and that would demand a commitment of time from me in order to learn and use its many features. The Nikon manuals are OK, but the presentation is not as user friendly as this Dummies book is. The author organizes things well and I remember what she told me. She is not afraid to make recommendations and to tell you why. The camera manual will never take you by the hand and guide you like that! My confidence in my ability to use the D90 has soared, and I can see the difference in my shots. I find the Dummies series to be uneven - some great, some never getting beyond the obvious. This is one of the best.
Book Review: Wonderful book. Thank you! Summary: 5 Stars
This book was much more helpful than the mfr. supplied manual. It walks you step-by-step through more information than you probably need to know.
I had never owned anything but point-and-shoot cameras before, and was referred to this book by a friend and professional photgrapher. I'm glad she did!
You'll be able to learn not just the auto settings and what you can do with them, but the P,S,A, and M settings as well. From aperture, shutter speed and ISO to White Balance and the Nikon specific terms and features that will allow you take the perfect shot time after time.
The sky is the limit with this camera and this book will help you achieve all that you want to do with it!
Book Review: Good guideline Summary: 4 Stars
Good book with easy to follow instructions;it shows You the basics to take decent pictures. The author advises to set up the camera on Adobe RGB instead of the default : sRGB .If You google sRGB vs Adobe RGB You'll see that over 90% set the camera on sRBG and They give You the reasons. In my experience the factory default is USUALLY ( not always) the best and this goes for cameras, audio equipment,TVs etc.Nikon's default is sRGB.In the final analysis it does not matter which of the 2 has more colors but which gives a better and a more pleasant picture in YOUR monitor and in YOUR printer .Does it really make any difference:sRGB or aRGB?
