Book Reviews of Nothing to Lose (Jack Reacher, No. 12)

Book Review: The series is grinding to a halt
Summary: 2 Stars

This book was an error on the part of Mr. Child (recently outed by the NYT with his real name and brother). Lets count the errors:

1-The book mentions that Reacher has been out of the Army for 10 years. So he has lived as a vagrant and murderer for 10 years, and of course his direct connection with the Army is waning. His life is nothing that ought serve as a role model for anyone. Whats the goal beyond buying more clean underwear at WalMart?

2- The politics is showing. Reacher now supports an underground railway of deserters from the Iraq War. So much for country and Army. And the bad guy is a military contractor and evangelical Christian-can we spell "Republican"?

3- The story has 4 or 5 quasi-sub-plots with no real meaning; the test for subplots is to imagine the book with them totally edited out-would you have missed them at all?

4- Reacher's obligatory 3-night stand with the local policewoman is a fit-in module basically the same as in 5 or 6 of his other books.

5- In this book, Reacher clearly crosses the line to murderer. Perhaps he did so in earlier books, but here there are no doubts as to his willingness to kill to make himself feel better. This makes him a bit less admirable as a character to look forward to in future books as he aimlessly bums around the country on his killing spree. Reach has actually reached the status of serial killer, though the FBI does not connect the dots as yet.

Summary of Nothing to Lose (Jack Reacher, No. 12)

Two lonely towns in Colorado: Hope and Despair. Between them, twelve miles of empty road. Jack Reacher never turns back. It's not in his nature. All he wants is a cup of coffee. What he gets is big trouble. So in Lee Child's electrifying new novel, Reacher-a man with no fear, no illusions, and nothing to lose-goes to war against a town that not only wants him gone, it wants him dead.

It wasn't the welcome Reacher expected. He was just passing through, minding his own business. But within minutes of his arrival a deputy is in the hospital and Reacher is back in Hope, setting up a base of operations against Despair, where a huge, seething walled-off industrial site does something nobody is supposed to see . . . where a small plane takes off every night and returns seven hours later . . . where a garrison of well-trained and well-armed military cops-the kind of soldiers Reacher once commanded-waits and watches . . . where above all two young men have disappeared and two frightened young women wait and hope for their return.

Joining forces with a beautiful cop who runs Hope with a cool hand, Reacher goes up against Despair-against the deputies who try to break him and the rich man who tries to scare him-and starts to crack open the secrets, starts to expose the terrifying connection to a distant war that's killing Americans by the thousand.

Now, between a town and the man who owns it, between Reacher and his conscience, something has to give. And Reacher never gives an inch.
