Book Reviews of Nothing to Lose (Jack Reacher, No. 12)

Book Review: Couldn't get past political rant
Summary: 2 Stars

Sorry- once I saw where the story was headed I had to flip through pages to the ending. I wanted a thriller & to be fascinated with the story but, I just don't believe that someone like Jack Reacher has such a whiny liberal point of view. When are the idiots in Hollywood & everyone in the entertainment industry going to realize- we just want to be entertained- do not preach politics at us. Big turn off. I have read all the Reacher novels in order so far & loved them all- - until now. I hope the next one is better without all the "preachy drama." It's one thing to be a veteran and anti-war but pleaaaze-this is not the Jack Reacher I have come to know & love. Tone it down a notch. Believe me, like another reviewer said- war-hating liberals are not the target audience for Jack Reacher novels- and if they become so- I probably won't be reading them anymore.

Book Review: Pretty weak effort
Summary: 2 Stars

I generally like the Reacher series but this one falls short. On the other hand it wasn't bad enough to quit on.

My problem with the book wasn't the political point of view, although I'm not sure it was necessary or advisable to saddle Reacher with a political pov.

I just couldn't get over the improbable fact SPOILER that while the villian could build a 20 ton dirty bomb couldn't buy his henchmen a few guns to blast Reacher with. Reacher keeps turning up in this guys evil lair and starts brawling with two, four, six bad guys and nobody has a gun? This is rural Colorado we're talking about.

Other than that there was a lot of walking and driving around a fairly uninsteresting setting.

On the plus side the dialogue, as usual, was pretty crisp and the background research seemed solid as well.

Book Review: I Hope They Are Not All The Same
Summary: 3 Stars

I had never heard of the Jack Reacher series previously. I bought Nothing to Lose at the usual Big Box Discount store. I liked the book so I ordered the first six of the series from Amazon.com. I am about one-third of the way through The Killing Floor and I am a little distressed. Nothing to Lose and The Killing Floor, are, for all practical purposes, the same book. Starts out in a diner, arrested in the diner immediately, romance with a local female cop, big conspiracy operation, etc., same in both books. Please tell me that I didn't waste my money and that Nothing to Lose (Jack Reacher, No. 12)all of the books are the same with the only changes being the names and places, plot remaining exactly the same!

Book Review: Plot Holes!!
Summary: 2 Stars

totally agree with the other low-star ratings--this was not up to Child's previous high-levels of writing.

What was really nagging me about this was:

(1) The Military Police post that was (supposedly?) protecting the demolition yard was 10 miles outside of town--how were they supposed to protect it from so far away? If they had been on-site, they would have kept Reacher from having easy access (and there would have been no book).

(2) The underground railway for the deserters also went through the same town? kinda stretches the imagination that both things would be happening in a town of 2300--perhaps a subplot that didn't need to be included.

(3) No toothpaste or deodorant? how does he attract the ladies.....?

Book Review: Ya got everything to lose - like time!
Summary: 3 Stars

Man i have read all this series of books and hate ta say this one didnt fire on all cylinders wit me. What happned? Is it just gettin old and runnin out of ideas? Or is it like all series i read where they all cant be 4 or 5 star raters?
Yeah Jack is back here, but he didnt kick the bootie as much as before, and the plot was - meh.

But i git it, not all of em can shine like fine wine. I will still read the new ones when they come out. Unless it really goes down so deep in the tar pit that i cant see the Reacher for what he was.

But after a recent bad coupla reads in another long runnin series i can see this author can take the good reviewes with the bad.

Be seein yous Jack!
