Book Reviews of Now I'm Reading! Playful Pals, Level 1Book Review: Very motivating for the child who just wont!!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
my son now six has known his letter sounds since he was four and just would not be willing to sit down and read even the simpliest of books to me, and I have a lot of emergent readers and leveled readers. This was the set That did it for us. He begs to read these books, he thinks they are so funny and they are wrote in a way that works for him. These books really concentrate on phonics and not very much on sight words, so be prepared to back up this set with books that use more sight words, like "go dog Go" and "Are you my mother" from DR. Suess.
If your child is resisting reading this set just might do it for you. 10 pages per book with a couple words to start and building onto the sentence with each page, encourages child to sound out a new word or two each page, but uses lots of familiar words from the previous page to help the child stay motivated and unlike other phonics readers these stories make sense and are fun to read.
This set focuses on consenant blends and is the second in the set of level one books about animals, the other level one set uses mostly 3 letter words, while this one has a larger variety of four letter words, but still using short vowel sounds. Words like: splat and flat.
The level 2 set works on long vowel sounds
and the level 3 set continues to add new letter combinations.
Book Review: Excellent series for teaching reading -beginning with "Playful Pals" Summary: 5 Stars
After reading many of the positive reviews about this series on Amazon, I was persuaded to try the books and they have been a hit with my almost 5-year-old. She got through the first two Bob series (and we are using those in conjunction with this series) and she seems to enjoy reading the books which have the added bonus of having a high-interest level. In Level 1: Playful Pals, the emerging reader is introduced to the beginning phonics skills of short-vowel sounds, simple consonant sounds, and also beginning sight words.
There are ten books in this particular set, all of which are about animals indulging in some form of play and are able to engage children's interest whilst building their self-esteem and confidence as they successfully complete each little book. The ten titles are: Rat Naps, Fox Hops, Pig Sits, Bug on a Rug, A Bed for Pets, The Plant, Hop Frog Hop, Drips and Spills, A Trunk For Buck, and Egg Legs. There is also a guide for parents and teachers which helps provide guidelines to establish a successful reading plan. There are incentive stickers that make excellent positive reinforcement. I'd highly recommend this series (I also purchased the others in the series to follow up on, and we are on the second set) to beginner readers.
Book Review: A Must buy for little readers Summary: 5 Stars
I started introducing letters and letter sounds to my 4 year old in preparation for pre-K this year- she did not find this fun, and while she was learning, it was a struggle to get her to do it. Then I discovered this series-she absolutely loves these books. I bought our first book in this series 3 months ago and my 4 year old is already reading. She has mastered the skills in the level one books and I am planning on buying her a couple of level two books next. I have tried other begining reader types of leveled books and the level one books are too difficult for children just starting to learn phonics skills and blending. They have not held her interest because she needed too much help to feel that she was doing it on her own. "Now I'm Reading" starts at the perfect level for kids just learing to read and builds their confidence and makes them want to keep working at it. She started by slowly blending and decoding the words in the story and she is now reading the stories with fluency and has gone through all her stickers. My daughter loves to tell people that she can read all by herself.
Book Review: Starting at the very beginning Summary: 5 Stars
Playful Pals is one of two Level 1 books in the Now I'm Reading! series. The set contains ten 10-page books which feature short-vowel sounds simple consonant sounds, and beginning sight words. The ten books are: Rat Naps, Fox Hops, Pig Sits, Bug on a Rug, A Bed for Pets, The Plant, Hop Frog Hop, Drips and Spills, A Trunk for Buck, and Egg Legs. The set comes with a Parent Guide booklet which explains how to get the most out of the books and help your child to be a successful reader. Each book comes with 5 incentive stickers (50 in all) to reward your little reader. Books 1-5 feature mostly three-letter words and some four-letter words. Books 6-10 feature mostly four-letter words and some five-letter words.
The books are great for holding the child's attention and interest through funny stories and pictures. My child learned to read with this series and has taken those phonics skills to more advanced levels. These are books your child will WANT to read! Highly recommend!
Book Review: Best Learning to Read Set I've Seen Summary: 5 Stars
I rarely write reviews, but felt compelled to in this case. I can't speak highly enough about these books. My four year old little boy who is extremely busy and rough and tumble will sit down to read these with me. Better yet, he's laughing at all of them - he thinks they are very silly so he doesn't realize how much he's actually learning since it's fun for him. We have virtually every set of 'learn to read' books available and these are by far our favorite for very beginners. The illustrations are bright and funny, the sentences progress in a way that reinforces the learning and the stories are very silly, which is appealing to young children. I also appreciate the self-contained folder to keep them organized. We have Bob books everywhere and can't keep track of them. (Plus they aren't colorful or as well written.) I just wish there were more in the set at every level - 10 books doesn't feel like enough for a series he enjoys so much.
