"I'll race you to the corner, Ellen!" Racing, games, wishes, dreams...... The sweet memories before the war could appear only in the heads of Annemarie Johansen and her best friend Ellen Rosen, a Jew. The year is 1943, Copenhagen, Denmark. The Johansens and the Rosens live in a small apartment building in a typical Copenhagen neighborhood; small shops, kids playing in the street, parents on their ways to work. But something doesn't seem right. More and more Jewish shops close, Jews get fired, and laws are passed forbidding Jews to do almost everything. Ellen's family is in big trouble. It's now up to Annemarie and her family to save their dearest friends. What will happen? Will the Rosens survive? Will Annemarie will be brave enough? Will she see her best friends again?

This book is talking about rescuing. The Johansens are trying their best to save this innocent Jewish family. They are risking their lives to approach their goal and dream: to see their friends smiling again. The danger does not matter now. They are ignoring the risk of being killed by the Nazis. "Friends will take care of them, that's what friends do." Kindness, love, compassion, and caring for their friends are the characteristics that make the Johansens rescuers, true heroes.

I think that this is a very important book to read and I recommend it because it gives us a very important massage about the Holocaust and true heroes that fought to end it. You can't ignore such an important topic. It's amazing that some people don't learn a lesson from it. Today, there are smaller Holocausts happening all over the world and there are rescuers who are there to help these people. If all people had ignored the Holocaust, there would be no rescuers. Think about it, what would happen to the Jewish people then?

Book Review: Book Review of Number the Stars by Louise Lowry
Summary: 5 Stars

I thought that Number the Stars was a wonderful and intriging book. The book allows the reader to see what a young girl thought and felt about what was going on during the Nazi's invasion of Denmark. The author uses language that allows the reader to feel what a young girl may have been feeling at this time.
I was very impressed with the way that the author uses the theme of pride. Pride is represented in a number of different ways. The author illustrates that everyone has pride. She illustrates that the Jewish people have pride, the King has pride, and all the people of Denmark have pride.
The story also illustrates bravery. Bravery is shown by so many people in this story. The author shows the reader that all of the people in Denmark needed to brave. It also ilustrates that sometimes people do not have the choice to be brave, it is the way of life.
This book also illustrate friendship. The author creates a special bond that is shared between two young girls. Friendship is shown on two levels. The book illustrates the friendship between the two girls and the friendship between the parents. It illustrates that sometime people are willing to risk thier lives for thier friends. It illustrates the position that people were put in. It shows the will of the people, people will risk their lives for the saftey of others. People are willing to endure many hardship in order to save other people and do the right thing.
The book also illustrates that age made no difference during this time. Peter and Lise were young and died while fighting for the freedom of others. Annamarie's parents were also brave. The young girls also had to endure and survive the terrible treatment.
I really enjoyed this book and would recommend this book to everyone.

Book Review: The True Stars of Denmark
Summary: 4 Stars

I read "Number The Stars" by Lois Lowery and it was very fascinating! It really captured the Holocaust taking place in Denmark, and made you feel like you where actually living it. This book was very exciting and was hard to put down. The main characters in this book are Ellen, Annemarie, Kirsti and their families. Annemarie is Kirsti's big sister and Ellen is their friend. It starts when the three girls are walking home from school one day, and are stopped by a Nazi soldier. Ellen is very frightened because she is Jewish, and knows what may happen to her and her family. When Ellen's family starts to get worried they send Ellen to stay with Annemarie's family until it is safe. One night, in the middle of the night, the Nazis come looking for Ellen's family and the Nazis decide to pay a visit to Annemarie's family, who are neighbors with Ellen's family. They are caught off guard and have little time to stash Ellen's Jewish star necklace. Annemarie's family decides it is safer for the girls and their mother to stay at their uncle's house until Ellen and her family are safe. Annemarie's uncle is a fisherman and now has dedicated his life to, no not fishing, but smuggling Jews over the sea to Sweden. The Nazis have been on to his plan and come to investigate him. However, all they find is a handkerchief. If you want to know how the handkerchief plays a role in the story, or if you are just dying to know if Ellen and her family get to Sweden safely you must read this book. If this sounds interesting to you or if you just loved this book try these other books: "Behind The Bedroom Wall", "Anne Frank's Diary" and "Nory Ryan's Song". One thing I love is a good book that captures you in the story.

Book Review: The Book to Remember
Summary: 5 Stars

I rate the book "Number the Stars" written by Lois Lowery with 5 stars.
I rated this book with five stars because of it's amazing detail about hiding the Jews. This book doesn't include bad details, its just about how Annemarie Johannsen helped her friend Ellen Rosen hide from the Nazi soldiers. This book shows friendship and courage. An example of this was a time when they were hiding Ellen and the soldiers came banging on the door at night. Elllen stuck out because she was the only one with dark hair. Ellen was almost caught, but thanks to Annemarie's dads quick thinking she was ok because his dead daughter had dark hair as a baby and so he showed them her picture. That takes courage and bravery, and also quick thinking.
"Number the Stars" also talks about unity. The book says that one time a Nazi soldier asked who was King Christian X to a young boy. The boy told him who he was and then the soldier asked who his body gaurds were. The young boy looked him strait in the eye and said, "All of Denmark is his body gaurd." This is true and was documented, Annemarie heard this story and told her dad that all of Denmark were the Jews bodygaurd. This shows unity between their country and also between neighbors. This made the story all the better. This book is so good filled with adventure and friendship. I think you all should by or borrow this book, because once you read it you'll never forget it.
Some other books you should get are Close to a Killer, the Trixie Belden seriies and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I am 12 years old and in the 7th grader at HRMS I love to read, espicially adventure and mystery books.
