Book Review: Disappointing

I was really looking forward to this book. After reading all the glowing reviews, I decided to buy it. It seemed like a perfect option as a guide for both hiking and snorkeling on our upcoming trip to Oahu. While the book certainly seems to have lots of information, the layout of that information is not user-friendly. In my opinion, a hiking guide should do more than give you a description of the route--it should tell a story and help you enjoy and visualize a trail before you get there. This book hasn't done that for me. It's unintuitive and very difficult to navigate. There's almost too much information crammed into each hike in most cases, but then they omit really important information like how long it will take you to do a hike. Knowing mileage is good (the book gives mileage for each hike), but it's almost more useful to know how many hours a hike will take. Also, since there are so many hikes listed, it would be good to have a rating system or a popularity list. I'll be sure to post a follow-up about how useful the book was once we come back from our trip, but for now, the book has not allowed me to dream about those hikes before I ever hit the trail the way a good hiking book should.
