Book Reviews of Odd ThomasBook Review: A Truly Great, Engaging Character... Summary: 4 Stars
Dean Koontz is a creator in the truest sense. He brings forth characters and places that are utterly alive. Odd Thomas is Koontz's greatest creation since Chris Snow in Fear Nothing.
Odd Thomas may, in his own "odd" way, be even more engaging than Mr. Snow.
Pico Mundo, the setting of this story, also teems with wonderful "minor" characters. The sheriff is probably my personal favorite of the bunch, which is saying a lot--the competition, especially considering Terrible Chester, is stiff.
Now that I have said only nice things, I must mention that the story arc of this novel is one of Koontz's most implausible. Then again, this may not be so bad. The fact that Koontz somehow makes it work is a testament to his powers as a storyteller.
I give Odd Thomas a hearty recommendation. I also must make mention of its sequel: Forever Odd. Forever Odd is so emotionally powerful that I was moved. I am rarely moved by novels.
I am looking forward to reading Brother Odd. You should make haste to read this book if you have not already.
Book Review: Excellent Book... so much fun to read Summary: 5 Stars
First let me say that i am not the biggest Dean Koontz fan. I have read only a few and while some have been great, others have left me wanting more. So this is a review on a book that i did not have high expectations on. Several people had been suggesting this book to me for a few months and while on vacation i reluctantly picked it up. WOW! was i surprised. While on a 7 day vacation at the beach i managed to read Odd Thomas in 3 days (which for is me is quite a fast pace) and then i went out to every book store i could until i found the sequel, Forever Odd.
This book was amazing. I throughly enjoyed the twisted humor and the intense drama/thrillers in this book. The plot was well written and the character development was unlike most books i have read in the past. Trust me, if you read the highlights of this book and think that the supernatural aspects of this book will not be for you, just give it a try. I was skeptical at best and now i am a huge fan of the Odd Thomas books.
Kudos to you Mr. Koontz for a great new character! Keep 'em coming!
Book Review: Big nod for Odd Summary: 5 Stars
whether you're a Dean Koontz fan or not, if you enjoy fiction (and this isn't his usual "out there" story telling, you're going to love "Odd Thomas". You will like the main character "Odd" from the beginning and at the end you will love him. Odd Thomas has the gift of knowing things. A sixth sense...yes, (whisper) he sees 'dead people'. But "the dead don't talk" in Odd's reality. I got away from Dean Koontz a few years ago because his dialogue got so descriptive and flowery that by the time I finished reading a paragraph that should have been integral to the story, I'd forgotten or stopped caring what it was I had been so eager to know. Not so with Odd. You can't turn the pages fast enough. I'm a middle aged female professional with an average IQ but above average common sense and I will read all the Odd series, for sure and give any other Koontz novels a go as well. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
Other authors I enjoy and recommend are Jodi Picoult, Anita Shreve, Robert Parker, James Patterson, Michael Connelly, Sue Monk Kidd and the list goes on.
Book Review: A Riveting Adventure. Summary: 4 Stars
In 'Odd Thomas' we once again see Dean Koontz delving delicoiously in the subject of the paranormal. The main charcter, Odd Thomas, is plauged by the ability to see the deceased, and sometimes even, wolfish creatures of unkown origin, that signal the forecoming of death and destruction; and furthermore plauged with a disturbing family history. In this riveting tale, Dean Koontz takes us into the world of Odd Thomas as he tries to prevent maybe the greatest disaster the quiet town of Pico Mundo has ever encountered.
Koontz successfully embarks on this exciting adventure in his well-known storytelling style. Colored with fantasticly informal text, and flavored geniusly with Koontz's brand of witty humor, 'Odd Thomas' is a very accessable and delightful novel.
The only complaint that I have concerning this book, is the ending. What was intended to add a 'twist', succeded only in disrupting the syrup flow of the story, and widthdrawing from what could of been, a tearjerker ending.
Overall a delightfully entertaining read.
Book Review: Dean Koontz Surprised Me Summary: 5 Stars
Unlike many of the favorable reviews of this book, I am not one of those who have been a long-time Dean Koontz fan. In fact, I have been disappointed by several of the books I've read of his, finding his prose oddly cumbersome and, to be blunt, unprofessional. But I keep reading about him, keep seeing how successful he is in a genre I just love (horror), and when I came across the positive reviews for ODD THOMAS, I had the first couple of chapters delivered to my Kindle, I was mesmerized.
This was a really good book! And the writing was outstanding! I couldn't believe it. Naturally, I used my Kindle to order the whole book and I'm happy to say ODD THOMAS made a believer out of me. Koontz kept up the wonderful, lovable, and credible narrative voice well and his story and vision of an apocalyptic nightmare in small town California kept me glued to the page. ODD THOMAS was simply one of those delightful reading experiences that are marked by completely devouring the book in as few sittings as possible.
I can't wait to read the sequel.
