Book Review: The Pages Practically Turn by Themselves... Summary: 5 Stars
I started this book on a Friday afternoon, read the first 20 pages or so, and by Sunday evening I had spent the bulk of my weekend waking hours (and some of my sleep time Sunday evening) stuck to this book. Once you start reading it, you literally continue turning the pages wanting more and more of this story. I usually don't allow myself to read something so quickly, because I like to savor books, contemplate what I've read every day. I couldn't allow that here - the story was moving so fast, I had to keep up. Very well written and full of suspense. The characters were believable, though some situations didn't seem to fit at first, by the end they made more and more sense. I can't wait to read the rest of the series. Odd Thomas is now one of my favorite literary characters.
Book Review: Makes every second seem like an hour Summary: 1 Stars
This was my first time reading Koontz. I must say, it was a huge disappointment. The book starts off quite promising, but then quickly leads you through every mundane detail of every scene. I assume the writer had enough material for a short story, but fiscal considerations prompted him to create a 10 hour cd. (I heard it on a CD instead of reading a book). The characters are developed and Koontz can definitely write, but like Stephen King, he is verbose. I have read "The Stand" and "It" and both books are over a 1000 pages, so I am not averse to reading if their is a story. If your book is 70% description of minutia and 30% plot, then you have failed as a writer, and are only selling books because at one time, you wrote something good. This was such a waste of time and money.
Book Review: Enough, already! Summary: 1 Stars
I've read several books by Koontz now and this is the worst. It takes so long for him to get to the point that everything is anticlimatic. I don't need to know the background of every minor, passing character. I don't care about all the sappy, stupid, overly cute banter of the characters - it just goes on and on and on.........
This book could have been 1/2 the length and been better for it.
The Frankenstein series is great, but this - PULEEZ! I also read Relentless and it's about as bad - only with even more "cute" whimsical banter that makes me want to vomit.
I read this book in 2 days - the first day I put up with it, the second I skimmed as fast as I could to the end. It's an interesting premise, but riuned by all the detail and irrelevant non-action.
Book Review: Fun read Summary: 5 Stars
Odd Thomas, the title character, is a humble fry cook who happens to see dead people, and he has some other supernatural talents. What I liked about this book is that he doesn't have a lot of angst about his abilities. He doesn't constantly whine about how unfair it is, or overly empathize with the lost souls. He does what he can to help the dead, but his focus is on the living. He doesn't shrink from his responsibility to act on and use his powers. I don't consider this horror, more of a supernatural thriller.
Dean Koontz really impressed me with this series. The plot moves quickly and smoothly, his style reminded me much more of watching a movie than reading a book, to be honest. Just a pleasure to read all 4 of the books, hopefully more to come.
