Book Reviews of Odd Thomas

Book Review: Marvelous characters and original plot !
Summary: 5 Stars

Odd Thomas is a simple guy with a very few needs in life but love and faith. He has a unique gift... he can see ghosts (dead people) and he uses this ability to lead his small town sheriff to murderers. He communicates in some way with deads and he can anticipate incoming crimes from dreams and special ghosts called borachs.

At first I did not have a big interest for this story setting and main character, as I generally hate "too much" paranormal in plots, especially with ghosts! But I had heard so many great comments about the book that I gave it a try.

I was really surprised! Odd Thomas is a really well-built and lovely but simple character. The main quality of this book is the unique "first person" writing style. I was taken away by the intrigue and could not put it down. Usually I hate book endings, but I loved this one for its originality. I highly recommend this book, my second Koontz novel (have a look at THE HUSBAND, almost as good and very different!)

Book Review: A Masterful Writer With A Very Likable Character
Summary: 4 Stars

Few writers can master a language & narrate a story as well as Mr. Koontz.
His writing & descriptions throughout the book have the reader really understand how odd Mr. Thomas & his life really are. It's all done in a style that puts a smile on the readers face page after page.
The book seems purposely written with sequels in mind. The descriptions set the stage to understanding characters in future books. Unfortunately this also bogs the middle story down quite a bit.
The beginning starts off very well. The last 20 pages, or so, are superb; the ending sad & bittersweet.
The writer's style & mastery cannot completely save the very slow middle story. Worth the read? Most definitely

Book Review: An Odd Encounter
Summary: 5 Stars

Dean Koontz was definitely firing on all cylinders when he wrote Odd Thomas. Stepping outside his usual multiple viewpoint, third person style, Koontz keeps this first person narrative lively by allowing the story to unfold through the eyes of the quirky but likeable character of Odd Thomas. In the beginning, I thought Koontz's actually naming the character "Odd" Odd Thomasa bit much, but as the plot pulled me in that didn't seem to matter. If you're a Koontz fan, you'll love this one.

Book Review: Is Odd sane?
Summary: 5 Stars

I am not going to do a rendition, this has been done quite well. I really liked this book. I thought it was very well written, with a compelling story and likable characters. I am really looking forward to more Odd Thomas stories, but what I would really like to see is a movie. Although I don't think even m night shamalayan could pull this one off.
I highly recommend this book. I am a huge Dean Koontz fan and I believe this is his best work.

Book Review: The book that brought me back to Mr. Koontz...
Summary: 5 Stars

A wonderful new young character with quirks, a witty r'epertoire and of course...special powers. The banter alone is a reason to buy these books. (or audio, my favorite) A conscientious and humble hero that appeals to my own sense of justice, love and honor. I could say more but you really need to get to the Amazon site and get UPS rolling with this puppy! Time's a wastin'!
