Lilly Constable, age 12, has entered into the throes of first love, surrounded by her family and friends, celebrating their annual summer solstice tradition at their family cottage in Maine.

Lilly's regular routine of spending every moment with her dog Wilma, an assortment of summer friends, and spying on her gorgeous mother comes to a screeching halt with the simultaneous arrival of the Lowells and Peaches Davenport, an orphaned girl living with grandparents at Edgewater. Suddenly drawn to comb her hair and dress nicely for the evenings, Lilly falls hard for the golden-haired Jon, who reciprocates in kind. Abandoning her routine, she and Jon spend every moment possible together. Peaches' jealousy of the star-struck pre-teens comes to full boil just as Lilly celebrates the magic of Midsummer's Night. Returning to reality, Lilly's mother's activism reaches new heights after their black maid is attacked on the way to work. Liz Constable captures the anguish and disparity of segregation, earning praise from First Lady Jackie Kennedy for her artistic portrayals.
