Book Reviews of Off Season

Book Review: Too many deaths
Summary: 3 Stars

I love Anne Rivers Siddons and always look forward to her next book. I did have trouble with this one, however. For me, it was that everyone in the book was dying and the two loves in Lilly's life (Jon and Cam) each caused the death of a sibling, which stretched believability. I was distracted by all the deaths -- Peaches' parents, Jon, Jon's brother, Lilly's mother, Lilly's dog, Cam, and Cam's sister. Midway through the book, I started to count them. As much as I liked the development of Lilly's character, the improbable plot made it hard for me to stay focused. And then when I got to the end, I felt I had to guess at what Lilly had found out about Cam. Although it was still a good read, this wasn't ARS's best book.

Book Review: Enjoyed this read
Summary: 4 Stars

My deceased Mother and I enjoyed Siddon's work for a long time. Since her passing I find it difficult to read them and enjoy them since I now have no one with which to discuss the book. However, I will say I enjoyed the book. I have loved all of them but "King's Oak" which I found a little OTT. I also must agree as to the ending. I thought it was a little undeveloped. As one reviewer stated doing I may go back and read the last half of the book again. I also felt that the initial characters were a little young for that depth of feeling although that may have been the whole point since the entire scenario was "magical". Also, I must admit to not being able to remember when I was eleven or twelve years old.

Book Review: Ludicrous
Summary: 2 Stars

After critical acclaim from Colony, Peachtree Road, and a few others, Anne Rivers Siddons has become a caricature of herself. Every book, and Off Season is no exception, has some type of shabby chic beach house in it with "rump sprung" chairs, an elegant though somewhat icy husband, and a plain talking galpal who tells the lovely but troubled heroine how it is. Falcons also make their unteenth appearance in this tome. The life affecting love affair of this book, between a couple of "tweeners" back in the '60s is absolutely ludicrous and implausable. I'll give it to Siddons, her books are great escapist light reading now, but not nearly in the class of quality writing her earlier books were.

Book Review: Another great read from Siddons
Summary: 4 Stars

Off Season by Anne Rivers Siddons, was published by Hatchette Book Group, and begins with Libby McCall returning to her summer home in Maine to spread the ashes of her beloved husband, Cam. While she's there, she's flooded with memories. Memories starting at the age of 11 when her first love dies in a tragic accident, through her mother's death and ending with her marriage. After a summer in the Maine cottage, Lilly holds a memorial service for her husband and discovers a secret she'd rather not know.

Anne Rivers Siddons is a masterful storyteller. This book has strong narrative and great character development. It's a story that will keep you enthralled until the end.

Book Review: I'm so glad I loved this book!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been reading Ms. Siddons book since her first one came out, many, many years ago. I have loved some, and just liked others, but I think she is a wonderful writer. Her descriptions say so much, in few words, I can see and feel what she is writing about.
I loved these characters, flaws and all, and I enjoyed the little touch of mysticism she added through the book. I noticed in other reveiws, that this was not a favorite of some readers, but I felt like it added to the magic of the location that most of the story took place. And the magic of the strong relationships. I just thought this was a beautifully written book, and it is now up there with my favorites of her books.
