Book Reviews of Off Season

Book Review: Sick!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Off Season is the most disturbing book I've ever read. This is not for the faint at heart, and believe me, people who also read this know what I'm talking about. Jack Ketchum has a twisted and sick mind, and I mean that in a good way. His writing here is flawless and it really takes you into the heads of these demented characters. There were scenes in this book that honestly made me feel queasy. I had to put it down for a whole week before going back to it. No book I've read has had that affect on me, not even Stephen King's novels. Ketchum shows the raw brutality of this savage family and the desperation that Nick and Marjie go through to survive. This novel makes Ketchum's The Girl Next Door look tame. Not taking anything away from The Girl Next Door, that is also a very scary and disturbing story, but Off Season absoulety takes the cake on the sick factor.

Book Review: Amazing Book...If it weren't so Outdated
Summary: 2 Stars

Jack Ketchum is unquestionably my favorite horror writer of all time. From Girl Next Door to Peaceable Kingdom, his prose is perfectly constructed with sharp pacing and fear-inducing ideas. However, while this book was certainly all of those things, it suffers from having been published over ten years ago. If the story were to happen now, since the inception of wireless internet and cellular phones, it would end before it started. And because isolation is the key to most great horror, especially this one, something that can't happen nowadays ceases to be scary. However, I would hate to deter anyone from picking this up for a well-written book, it's just that most horror fans are looking to get scared and that won't happen here.

Book Review: Holy @#$%!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

When I was in high school, I was a huge fan of horror books and stories. Then, after majoring in Literature in college, I became some what of a booksnob - only reading the classic or works of 'serious' fiction. This book pulled me out of that God-forsaken hole! This is the first Jack Ketchum book I had ever read and all I can say is that I was hooked from the first chapter. Ketchum reminds me of old school Wes Craven (1970s pre-Freddy). Your not sure that any of the characters are ever safe (and most of the time they aren't!). Anyone could die at any moment and that makes for a thrilling read. I highly recommend this book to any current horror fan, new horror fan, or former horror fan trying to get back on the horse!!

Book Review: Brutal & Brilliant
Summary: 5 Stars

Jack Ketchum's first novel Off Season is finally available Uncut and Uncensored.

Honestly, you are wasting your time reading this review. You should just buy this book NOW.

The book is like ballsy 1970s horror movie combined with your worst nightmare.

As a lover of horror fiction, I loved this book. It is also the first book that has truly and honestly creeped me out in long time.

There are no zombies or aliens or monsters. Just the brutal savagery that can come from human beings. The story will keep your eyes locked on the pages. In Off Season, you never know who is safe or just how animalistic we as a species can be.

Check it out.

Book Review: Not for the faint of heart and weak of stomach!
Summary: 3 Stars

This is the 2nd Ketchum book I have read but it is actually his 1st book. The plot is straight forward a young woman (Carla) has rented a cabin in Maine and her sister (Marjorie), exboyfriend (Nick), current boyfriend (Dan) and two others are joining her for a week. Little do they know that a band of inbred, cannibals live in the area. What ensues is a creepy story with some definant gross out parts, but fortunatly for us Ketchum is a gifted writer and it is written very well. While I enjoyed his book The Girl Next Door better (for me it was a four or five star book) I still found Off Season to be an interesting read. But if you have a weak stomach you might want to pick another book.
