Book Reviews of Off Season

Book Review: Not sure where to begin...
Summary: 4 Stars

...so I'll keep it simple: This is, without doubt, one of the sickest and most disturbing books I've ever read--and I'm a die-hard Cliver Barker fan. Normally I'd engage a lengthy review, churning out plot points, or aimlessly mulling over what's good and bad about the book. This time, however, I'll say only that I finished the entire book in one sitting and it's still weighing on my brain. If extreme and intense graphic violence involving cannibalism upsets you, do not--repeat, do not--read Off Season. If your stomach is strong and your heart healthy, then by all means, have at it!

Book Review: I Thought it Would do More
Summary: 4 Stars

I really expected a lot more from this novel. After reading the reviews online and the Stephen King praise I picked this one up. It was fairly well written. I read it in 5 days which is pretty quick for me. As for being extreme horror, I am not sure. Certainly there was a scene or two that was graphic, but it wasn't overwhelming. I didn't really feel any horror from the book. Maybe because I didn't find the characters all that likeable. I will probably try another Ketchum book based on the strength of the writing, but overall this didn't really scare me like I would have wanted.

Book Review: Ketchum at his best
Summary: 4 Stars

Easily one of the most brutal books I have read. I did read the version that was unbutchered by the editors. The pace was fast and easily read in a day. I do not cringe at gore and in some books I feel gore is placed just for the shock value and does not add to the pleasure of the story. I do not feel that was the case here. I feel that the brutality envisioned was necessary to explain the intense circumstances these people were placed in. The story does place doubt in my mind to whether I will stop to help a lone kid on an empty country road!

Book Review: Far and away the worst book I've ever read.
Summary: 1 Stars

If you like 5th grade campfire tales, then perhaps you'll like this book.

It's horribly written, no character development, prose are childish, and the plot is so paper thin and predictable as to be laughable. The author has no respect for his readers. The entire book is a bunch of slasher moments tied together with a mish-mash mind numbing pronouns combined with horid, failed attempts at soft porn.

It goes into the very limited (perhaps 10) books in my life that have gone into the trash.

Book Review: Ketchum is a fiery force to know!
Summary: 5 Stars

Jack Ketchum is one of those writers that'd never get lost in the woodwork. I've never know him to go for the easy road; he's in a league of his own when it comes to psychological terror.
You can't predict what you'll get from a Ketchum story, but you can count on being surprised and breathless when you close the final page.
He is a major force!
