Book Reviews of OliviaBook Review: The Quintessential Children's Book! Summary: 5 Stars
FIVE STARS! Ian Falconer comes up with a children's book that no matter how many times I read through it, it is incredibly pleasing. The storyline about an imaginative young girl named Olivia is simple and captivating. Whether looking at art, building sand castles, or dealing with her copycat brother, Olivia is charming. The humor in Falconer's work is contagious with its harmonious blend of illustration and text. The illustrations are done in a "limited" palette of black white and red with an occasional brown thrown in. Please do not make the mistake of thinking that this book may be handicapped because of its limited palette. It merely serves to increase the reader's delight in Olivia and her world. Olivia is one of the finest reading encounters that I have run across in my life. Olivia is quite simply... perfect.Crazy James
Book Review: Oh, those pictures Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this for my five year old, and wish I bought it when she was a little younger. Despite the simple story line, she still likes to look at it, and I hope it's a book that will help her on the way to reading.
I was at first put off by the simplistic writing, but then realized that it was rather sly and rather good. Perhaps I was more put off by the fact that I have my very own Olivia living in my house, and the similarities are rather too striking.
The artwork is by far the best I've seen in a children's book, and I am happy with this purchase for the artwork alone. Since my daughter is old enough to appreciate and care for books, I bought the very good hardcover edition. The quality of the art on paper is superb, and leads me to wonder if we should add a child's book as a category of fine art.
Book Review: A Worthy Counterpart to Eloise Summary: 5 Stars
Having recently given birth to a daughter (3.5 months), I'm going a bit mad getting "girl power" books for her (and for me, I must confess). "Olivia" is brilliant! I love Eloise, but am pleased to also have something that works for even younger kids. We're already reading it to her, in the hopes that it will soon become a favorite. Olivia is the porcine version of every little high-energy girl, good at "lots of things", dreams of being Maria Callas and a Degas ballerina---this is a book that respects childrens' intelligence and sense of humor. Check out Ian Falconer's second book, "Olivia Saves the Circus"---the poster of Eleanor Roosevelt on Olivia's bedroom wall is priceless. Boys or girls, this is a must for all parents and kids who want something a little irreverent and different.
Book Review: I bought this book and the sequel for my infant daughter and Summary: 5 Stars
my husband said he thinks I bought it more for me than for our daughter! I am bowled over with the way that Falconer's simple text and charming illustrations meld into a book that, after taking it home and reading it, forced me to run to my computer to order another (and the sequel) to send to a child across the state. And I am one picky reader, too.Olivia makes me squeal with delight. Falconer captures the everyday life of a small child with humorous touches that are certain to amuse the parent asked to read the book aloud over and over and over again. I consider the $... I spent yesterday on Falconer books (purchased one "set" at a local bookstore and a second "set" here at Amazon.com--for much cheaper, I should add) to be well-spent.
Book Review: Olivia by Ian Falconer Summary: 3 Stars
Olivia lives with her mom, dad, her brother Ian, her dog Perry and her cat Edwin. Olivia likes to stay busy. She likes to scare her brother. On sunny days, Olivia likes to go to the beach and make sand castles. On rainy days, she likes to go to the museum and look at her favorite picture. Then she looks at another painting and says, "I can do that in five minutes." When she goes home, she tries to do it. She got ready for bed. Olivia asks her mom to read five books. They agreed to read three books. The story ends with Olivia and her mom telling each other they love each other. I did not like this book because I thought it wasn't nice for Olivia to draw on the walls. I would not recommend this book to other kids because it wasn't funny to do that.
