Book Reviews of OliviaBook Review: My 6-year-old niece loves it, and so do I Summary: 5 Stars
I got this for my niece for her 6th birthday. Before I wrapped it, I read it twice. I liked it so much that I almost included a note saying "please send this back when you're done with it". Just kidding. Sorta.
The reason why we like it so much is because Olivia is a lot like my niece. They both like to play dress up, sing and perform, and are reluctant to take naps. However, I wouldn't doubt that little boys or girls with a different personality might not engage with this book as much.
In conclusion, if you're looking for a present for a spirited little girl, this is a perfect choice.
Book Review: Great text--illustrations don't excite us Summary: 3 Stars
My preschool daughter and I adore Olivia. She's your typical opinionated, difficult, charming preschool girl. (My favorite is her songbook "40 very loud songs.") However the illustrations belong on/in the New Yorker (it was not a surprise to find this was Falconer's usual venue). They are black and white and gray with accents in red. BORING. Some people apparently like this--my daughter and I would prefer color. If Falconer could loosen up and illustrate to match the vibrant personality of his heroine I'd buy more Olivia books. (Even if Eloise is also in black and white--at least she has pink, the preschool girl hands-down favorite.)
Book Review: Smart, creative and funny...Olivia's a hoot! Summary: 5 Stars
Ian Falconer's story about a piglet named Olivia who likes to "wear people out" is both lively yet quiet with its beautifully done illustrations. The story is simply told and kids everywhere can identify with her and the things she does during the day. I also love the idea of her being inspired by Degas and Pollock paintings. This book doesn't cut corners with kids when it comes to cultural appreciation. She is imaginative and creative (sometimes TOO creative as her wall painting shows), and kids will enjoy her antics.I originally bought this book for a young cousin, but decided to buy another copy for myself!
Book Review: Simply terrific. Summary: 5 Stars
We LOVED both books. My husband and I read the Olivia books before reading them to our children. We laughed out loud at Olivia's antics and ability to be larger than life. Olivia is the representation of every imaginative, precocious, and mischievous little girl. Her ability to make the ordinary extraordinary is simply the coolest. Sometimes books don't have to be "literary masterpieces" to be enjoyed. The simplicity of the Olivia books is what makes them enjoyable. By the way the kids (little girl, age 9, and little boy, age 8) loved Olivia, too. A book for all ages - especially parents of little girls.
Book Review: One of the best picture books of the year Summary: 5 Stars
Olivia is quite a pig -- she wears her mother out, but she loves her anyway. "I love you anyway too," says Olivia. She is unapologetic, brassy, and supremely lovable. She is the very definition of a busy child: every morning, she gets up, moves the cat, combs her ears, moves the cat again... She tries everything and has supreme confidence in her ability to succeed. Olivia is irrepressible. The spare, deadpan text and the expressive illustrations work together to make a very funny picture book that is an extremely deserving recipient of its designation as a Caldecott Honor book.
