Book Review: Clever, intelligent, humorous, and delightful.

I had always thought this book looked "cute" based on the cover, but didn't pick it up for ages. Now I have a copy and am amazed at the intelligence and clever detail exhibited in the artwork. Falconer conveys emotions with very few lines. I love the 2-page spread that features Olivia trying on all her clothes. In the lower-left corner, Olivia is trying on pantyhose -- and her entire body is crammed into one leg. I didn't even notice that little detail until my second or third time through the book. I'm an adult with no children, but this book was nonetheless worth every penny to me.Book Review: Excellent book -- but doesn't translate well into Chinese

I loved Olivia in English, but the Chinese translation leaves a lot to be desired. The translator missed the fact that the author was using understatement to create a humorous constrast being text and illustration. The translator simply wrote words to fit the picture. For example, he translates the sandcastle tower picture: "Olivia did a really great job!" And some translations are just plain wrong. "Time out" was translated as "It's almost time." Such mistakes occur throughout the text. Chinese children will never know the true charm of Olivia.Book Review: A Creative Spirit Found - Pigs Can Dance And So Can You

If you in anyway believe that you have a gift, some God-given talent that is your passion - read this book. If you believe that you do not MAKE your child in your own image, but HELP her/him to discover what she/he already is - read this book to your children. If you want to own a book that would be comfortable in a museum gift shop, or next to any classic picture book in children's literature - buy this book. If you want to recapture your creative spirit and give yourself a lift - treasure this book and give "Olivia" a prominent place in your home or office.Book Review: Delightful!

I stumbled upon this book in the book store...it caught my eye because of the title broadly displayed on the cover...it is my baby daughter's name! I had to have it for simply that reason. Then when I read it, I was truly delighted with the story and the personality of Olivia..which matches our Olivia to a "T"! The story is charming, the art and use of color is clever and the humor is precious. Not to mention I grew up with a black cat who shares his name with Olivia's grandfather! A great book for any child's collection and one that we'll treasure.Book Review: sophisticated children's book for adults too

The new children's book "Olivia" appeals to children with its piggy silliness and beautiful illustrations, but its wit also appeals to parents who can easily relate to the boundless energy and tireless ambition of the tiny lead character. "Olivia" captures the magic and wonder of her age as she pictures herself as a ballerina, painter, opera singer, etc. Olivia's imagination and determination know no bounds, and the star pig serves as a strong role model for little girls- she is independant, creative and most ambitious.
