Book Reviews of Once Upon a Potty -- BoyBook Review: seems to be a hit Summary: 5 Stars
I agree that the drawings are a little abstract, the wording a little funny at times, but my son LOVES this book. It has definately helped with the potty training process. I'll admit it was a little trying reading this book hundreds of times - but whatever it takes to get the job done was my feeling. My son's friend came over the other day, he found the book on our book shelf and his mom said how much he loved it and what an integral part of their potty training experience it was for them. He loved the book, too. Potty training can be a tedious process for both parent and child, but this book seems to really appeal to the 2 to 3 year old boy crowd. Anything that helps the process along is what it's all about.
Book Review: Cute book Summary: 3 Stars
This is a cute book that my 2 year old really seems to enjoy, but I wouldn't say that it is really teaching him to want to use the potty any more than he already did. When Joshua, the little boy in the book, gets his own potty, the book goes through several pages of Joshua wondering what the potty is. After the first read through, my son was asking if we could skip those pages because he already knew it was a potty! I do like that it goes through the different parts of the body and tells what they are for. My son says, "Joshua has eyes like me! Joshua has hands like me! He has a wee-wee like me!" I think maybe if we'd gotten the DVD in conjunction with the book, it might have been more helpful.
Book Review: My son's current favorite! Summary: 4 Stars
We're in the process of potty-training now and my son really likes this book. It has encouraged him to consider the humble potty as a receptacle for his waste and has been a springboard for his questions about biological functions. Really, a great kid-friendly book. That being said, the writing is really awkward and I have to agree with another reviewer who pointed out that mom seems quite put upon to be changing diapers. So I've been reading the book in the 3rd person from the outset and glossing over poor mom's role in the process. I'm not trying to guilt my kid into using his potty.
Book Review: Timeless, Classic, and a Favorite! Summary: 5 Stars
My toddler LOVES this book. It is his current favorite. He loves pointing at each of the pictures and "reading" along with me. The pages are made of card stock weight materials instead of regular paper, so it holds up really well to the excited hands of my 21-month old. Sure, the art style is out-dated (the potty looks like a big pitcher), but a toddler isn't likely to notice the difference. My son isn't potty trained yet, but this book did exactly what I hoped it would - get him interested in his potty & used to the vocabulary. I'd definitely recommend this book to other parents.
Book Review: Very Cute and Useful Summary: 5 Stars
My own children had the "girl" version of this book and they remember it so fondly that my daughter requested the "boy" version for her son. Which I've happily purchased for him!
I love this little book and it has a "stick-to-it-ness" that works well with a preschooler. The illustrations are cute and it gives plenty of detail without being gross.
The only mild criticism I would have is that the boy's version uses the name "Joshua" for the main character and I would have better enjoyed something more original.
