Book Reviews of One Fifth Avenue

Book Review: Disappointed
Summary: 1 Stars

I must say, I was extremely disappointed with Bushnell's latest novel. I had to fight with myself to finish it. I was more than halfway through the book before anything even remotely exciting happened, and then when it did, it wasn't developed very well. I am an avid reader and I always read books until the end, but this one I actually dreaded picking back up again. Lola's character is annoying and James and Mindy Gooch are so bland that it makes my head hurt. Too many characters and not enough substance make this a book I wish I would have left on the shelf. If there was a half star rating I would have given it!

Book Review: bushnell - wharton
Summary: 4 Stars

i won't say bushnell's writing is as witty or stylish as wharton but this story really, really felt like a modern day version of wharton's world.

yes, almost all the characters are in some way selfish, greedy, shallow, stupid, but people are! i found myself understanding and sympathizing at some point with most of them. maybe that's because i too am middle aged, in a life that didn't turn out quite as i hoped. i read the whole thing in 2 days. it could be a good movie.

the reviewers who are complaining about too many characters? you sound just like lola fabrikant in the book!

Book Review: Candy for the Mind
Summary: 5 Stars

I am coming to the end of this book and find myself reading slower and slower because I don't want the story to be done. I think this is a fairly well-written comedy-of-manners and I agree with the comparisons other reviewers have made to the style of Edith Wharton. It's light, interesting, and feels a bit like candy for the mind. I think it would make a great movie and also has enough meat in it to sustain as a television series. I recommend the book highly. If you are anticipating taking a long airline flight or sitting on a beach somewhere, it will pass the time most enjoyably.

Book Review: Bland
Summary: 2 Stars

I'm giving up. I'm not going to spend any more of my free time on this book. When I purchased it, I had been looking for a light read set in NYC. I should have set higher standards. While One Fifth Avenue is certainly all of the above, it is also annoyingly dull. The characters are all very difficult to like (purposefully so?), and the story line is impossibly slow. I don't care how accurate Bushnell's social commentary is here, the point remains; not a moment I have spent reading One Fifth Avenue has been truly enjoyable. It has simply been a way of passing the time.

Book Review: hey, I am a fan
Summary: 5 Stars

If you are not a Bushnell fan, stay away. Better to start with Trading Up and moving on to Lipstick Jungle. These are great novels. One Fifth has all the elements of a Bushnell novel: Shallow, stunning protaganist attempting to sleep her way to the top, men chasing the shallow stunning girl even though she is evil, other characters who have a supporting role in the drama. But this novel is not as insightful. All the characters lack dimension. Bushnell can do better.

Why 5 stars? Because I really enjoyed the book even though it was lacking.
