Book Reviews of One-Skein WondersBook Review: I love this book! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this book a few months ago, because I liked a bunch of the designs in it. I also get bored when doing huge projects, and can't go into a yarn store without coming out with a skein or two of yarn just because it looks pretty or was extra soft. So I thought it would be perfect for me, and it is. I started making Christmas gifts out of it and most of my list is finished. A word of warning though, most of the designs in the book are a little on the femine side, so if you are thinking you are going to make a bunch of stuff for the guys in your life, you may want to consider another book. There is a hat, and some socks and a coffee mit that could work for guys, but I can't think of anything else in the book that most guys would be really excited to get. I love it and it's really helped me make things for my mom and sisters and mother-in-law.
Book Review: Great Projects - LOTS of Errors Summary: 2 Stars
Like other reviewers, I love the layout, organization, and variety of projects. HOWEVER, be aware that this book is full of pattern errors. For that reason, I would not recommend this book to beginners, or to those who rely on patterns for exact directions.
Here are a sampling of errors I found. I haven't written out details of the corrections; that's Storey Publishing responsibility.
The Gossamer Shell Scarf (p. 55) tells you to cast on 20, and then knit according to the pattern. However, the pattern stitch requires more than 20 stitches.
The Twisted Knee-High Sock (p. 44) contains incorrect instructions about arranging stitches before the heel flap. It has has incorrect directions for turning the heel.
There are others - be sure to read the other reviews!
Book Review: Cornicopia of ideas for Skein Singletons Summary: 5 Stars
Full of fun projects. This is a must have, especially if you don't buy many knitting books. It's a great beginner book with a multitude of projects - makes an excellent stash-buster book for seasoned knitters. Beware, there are no supurbly-earth-shattering-original ideas. The patterns seem fairly easy and the general variety is great - more than just scarves for sure! There are lots of good ideas for gifts - easier to justify an expensive yarn if you only have to buy one skein. Pair this book with a yummy yarn for a thoughtful gift for a new knitter.
The format is a little strange - the color photos all in the middle and the pattern in monochromatic pages in the front and back - don't let this turn you off - it actually simplifies finding projects - with only a few pages to flip through.
Book Review: Just Alright Summary: 3 Stars
This book is nice in that it has a great concept (what knitter doesn't love to make things quickly with one skein?) and that there are 101 patterns, which is refreshing in an inexpensive knitting book.
The beef I have with this book is that, simply put, I think most of the patterns are ugly or completely useless (I'm sorry, but DOLL CLOTHES? I think that's cheating a little bit on the one-skein concept). Of the 101 patterns, I think I found about 4 that I liked and perhaps would actually make. That's 4% of the book!
If you are someone who likes to just grind out projects, no matter how unattractive they are, then perhaps you will like this book better than I. Or if you have a daughter or granddaughter that wants sweater and socks for her dollies...
If not, save your money.
Book Review: Great patterns! Summary: 4 Stars
LOVE the Quick Felted Bag submitted by Adirondack Yarns. Have made two so far. Am disappointed, however, in the Diotima shell pattern that was submitted by Webs in Northhampton, Maine. It calls for a yarn that is sold exclusively from their shop and is only currently available in a few colors. I emailed the company to ask if there was a substitute yarn I could use and they couldn't provide me with an answer; basically just told me to choose a color that they currently had available. The rest of the patterns in this book, I must say, call for yarns that are available in lots of yarn shops and are not hard to find. Unless you're buying this book to make the Diotima shell, it is full of wonderful patterns and ideas and I recommend adding it to your library of knitting books.
