Book Reviews of One-Skein Wonders

Book Review: Lives up to its name!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a perfect book for all of those extra balls from projects! The patterns are from Yarn Shops across the USA, and there is a nice section in the back about the contributors. My favorite thing about the book is that the chapters are organized by yarn weight, so you can take that pretty ball of yarn and look for something to make easily! Also, the book has a center color section of all of the projects and the page number for the pattern. The variety is really great and not just scarves! There are hats and baby clothes and home furnishings and even a hair barrette. I think knitters of all skill levels will enjoy this book! If you are choosing between this book and Oneskein by Leigh Radford, I would chose this one because there are 101 projects versus 30!

Book Review: worth the money for the variety of patterns
Summary: 4 Stars

I like these one skein books cause I can't resist buying that gorgeous skein of yarn that I don't have a plan for and it ends up sitting in my stash. The patterns are broken up by the weight of yarn used, so you can look at only the patterns for your yarn, which I find really handy. The patterns aren't rated by degree of difficulty, but there is everything from dirt simple scarves to complex lace, so there's something for everyone. Color photos of every pattern let you see what it'll look like finished. I've made several items from the book and not found any mistakes in them. My only (very minor) complaint is that the photos are not with the patterns, but rather all together in the front of the book. Worth the money at full price, and a don't-miss at a used price.

Book Review: Already a favorite of mine
Summary: 4 Stars

For preparation for Christmas presents, I've been handing the book to my friends and relatives and asking them what they find attractive, what color they'd like it in, et cetera. I've worked 6 of the 101 patterns and found them to be explained clearly -- although I wish there were more charts for the lacey stitches, but then generally the lace called for here is at most two different repeats alternating with knit rows.

While this is not aimed at a beginner -- you'll need at least another text on the elementary instruction of the stitches -- the patterns are just what you need to gain confidence in finishing pretty and useful items, and to use up all the single balls and skeins from a stash or an impulse purchase at a yarn shop!

Book Review: Out of hundreds of books, this is one of my favorites
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been knitting for over 45 years and out of the literally hundreds of knitting books that I own, surprisingly, this is one of my favorites. The projects are varied, cute and organized in a way that makes sense. The colored photos of the projects are clear enough to see the details of each project and I personally really like that the editor chose to put them in the center of the book. Whereas I nearly always buy a knitting book for a few of the patterns that it contains (and that I think I will probably make - someday!), I know that I will use at least 1/2 of these, and have made some already. So that adds up to be.....at least 50 patterns for under $20? Now THAT'S a buy I don't think you'll regret -I didn't!

Book Review: Full of errata
Summary: 1 Stars

I own this book. I bought it because I liked the concept and because I have other Storey books which I have enjoyed. However, there were so many errors in the patterns in this book, that I had to print the errata from the publisher's website, whereas I normally just write the corrections in the book itself. My impression was that it was hastily produced in order to cash in on the knitting craze. And in the end, I wasn't that thrilled about finished items knitted using this book.

It taught me a lesson about buying pattern books, though. I no longer buy them hot from the press, but either check them out from the library to review before buying or read reviews written by people who have bought.
