Book Reviews of Organic Body Care Recipes: 175 Homeade Herbal Formulas for Glowing Skin & a Vibrant Self

Book Review: Title should be changed to organic and near organic recipes
Summary: 2 Stars

Bought this book to use as a reference for myself and to share with my customers. Honestly I skimmed thru the recipes and I frowned to see that talc is used, an ingredient whose chemical composition is simliar to asbesto and its a known cancer causing agent. A 1982 study showed that woman who used talc had a higher risk of ovarian cancer. Thats just one ingredient I saw. Like I said I skimmed. I saw that she did use a comercial type of non-petroleum jelly. I truly think most beginners would probably reach for the petroleum jelly. I'm just suprised she didn't offer a recipe in the book for the non-petroleum jelly which is so easy to make. A recipe I found posted by Annie B. Bond, calls for 2 ounces olive oil, 1/2 ounce grated beeswax, 12 drops grapefruit seed extract.
The recipes seem easy to follow and the book looks like an easy read. I'm just not happy about the talc.

Book Review: Organic bodycare recipes
Summary: 4 Stars

I am very pleased we bought this book: it gives a clear overview of herbs and spices, oils and flowers to use in your own products together with some non-organic items. Most things you may have in the garden or just in the pantry, it made me look at a lot of things in a different light: how can I use them as well. A good book for anyone who wants to create their own creams, masks and powders, it has even got some advice on making anti-bugs stuff. What I did miss though was a recipe for a base cream and for a base shampoo. There is not a lot of emphasis on emulsification. I am still struggling with the basics of cream making, ie how to make a cream more solid or more liquid, how to stabilize a cream so, over time, it does not seperate into it's watery and oily phase. Still, a good book, with lots of recipes ready to use, definitely a worthwhile purchase.

Book Review: Meh...
Summary: 3 Stars

This was my least favorite of the three books I bought. Maybe I had overly high expectations...

The only thing I liked about this book were the expiration date recommendations, but I'm not even convinced I can even take those seriously after some of the recipes I saw. A tangerine toner for summer? Seriously? Yes, they actually recommend a phototoxic eo for "warm weather and vacation". Oh and then there's a "moisturizer" recipe that is, and no i'm not kidding, nothing but water and glycerin with some eos as a fragrance.

if you are the kind of person that wants to waste their money making a myriad of frivolous body products that sound pretty then you will absolutely love this book. otherwise, spend your money on something else.

Book Review: Great Foundations
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a very useful book. I haven't a single doubt about that. However, two problems arise with this book. One is that the table of contents references a large amount of information into one section so that you have to do some hunting to find a particular recipe instead of easily finding it by individual page. This is just a personal thing that gets on my nerves so it may not prove true for everyone. Secondly, some of the recipes - not all - require ingredients that you have to hunt for at your local health food store. However, these ingredients are not so impossible to find that they require internet ordering only. That being said, I have a pretty positive view of this book.

Book Review: Wonderful for Save Your Money, Feed Your Skin Recipes
Summary: 5 Stars

What I love most about this book is that author Stephanie Tourles really opened my eyes for the first time of the importance of feeding my skin, and that my skin is the largest organ of my body. When we buy commercially made lotions, sunscreens and other cosmetics, we are literally "eating" chemicals through the largest organ on our body. Yech!!

I have made several of the recipes she has listed and love them all. I especially love the lip balm recipe she lists and the body balm recipe. And I love that they are all natural. If you are looking for healthy recipes and ways to have quality products while saving money by making it yourself, you can't beat this book.
