Book Reviews of Orphan's Journey (Jason Wander)Book Review: Jason Among the Aliens Summary: 4 Stars
Orphan's Journey (2008) is the third military SF novel in the Orphanage series, following Orphan's Destiny. In the previous volume, Jason conspired with three others to board a Troll -- a Pseudocephalopod troop transport -- carrying troops toward Earth. He, Brumby and Howard Hibble burned their way in, but found themselves far from their target.
Surrounded by a hundred thousand Slugs, Jason faced the possibility of being overwhelmed without doing any significant damage. Then Brumby told him about the explosive properties of ammonium nitrate. Jason and Howard escaped from the Troll, but Brumby didn't make it before the ship exploded. Of course, Brumby preferred dying within his greatest blast as opposed to the alternatives.
In this novel, Major General Jason Wander is now a military advisor. He travels around the world helping smaller militaries use weapons and equipment provided by the US Army. At the moment, he is advising the Free Tibet forces in their war with China. He has an intuitive grasp of military tactics, but very little experience.
Command Sergeant Major DeArthur Ord is the other half of the advisory team. Luckily for the general, Ord knows everything about military strategy, tactics, weapons and equipment. They work well as a team.
Howard Hibble is now a Colonel and is still THE top expert on Slugs. He leads a group studying the Slug warship brought back with them after their last excursion. The government has built the New Moon space station around the Firewitch. Naturally, the outer parts have been leased to civilian concessions.
Jason Udey (Jude) Metzger is Jason's godson and the son of his former gunner Sharia. Jude has very fast reactions; in fact, sometimes he seems to react before the stimulus occurs. Since he was the first baby born off the planet, scientists are still studying his physiology.
In this story, Jason finally is released from the hospital and takes Ord to visit Hibble in the New Moon. Jude is being tested as a pilot for the Slug warship and, of course, Munchkin is there with her son. Hibble gives Jason, Ord and Munchkin a tour of the ship.
Jude is already aboard being fitted for a support frame that holds him within the pilot's nest. The ship requires a pilot with extraordinary reflexes and won't start without one in the nest. Hopefully, Jude will meet the ship's requirements.
After a few seconds, the lights go out. The Firewitch starts powering up. Hibble orders his people to evacuate the ship, but someone must stay to supervise the robots.
Hibble and Jason team up on Munchkin and get her off the ship. Then the Exit Tube connecting the New Moon to the Firewitch breaks and the Slug ship heads out toward outer space. It approaches a black hole and emerges close to another solar system.
This tale takes Jason and his friends to the planet of the Bren. The Slugs have been there for centuries. The natives are fighting among themselves and providing the Bren with essential war materials. Somehow, Jason must convince the Bren to cooperate and attack the Slugs.
The story shows Jason leading thousands of locals into combat. He has many more opportunities to learn how to command troops. Naturally, he learns everything the hard way.
The story intermixes action and introspection. Jason has many reasons to doubt himself, but he keeps on trying. Read and enjoy!
Recommended for Buettner fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of major combat, personal combat, and political intrigue.

Summary of Orphan's Journey (Jason Wander)In the years since the last Slug War, Jason's command style hasn't made him any friends in the Army. Now, in an effort to keep him out of trouble, the Army has sent Jason to the vast, Earth-orbiting resort called New Moon. At the core of this enormous space station is a starship, a relic from the last war.
When a test run of the ship goes wrong, Jason, along with a handful of others, will be torn from orbit and thrust into space. Now, stranded on an alien planet, Jason realizes that not only are his friends are looking to him for rescue, but an entire planet sees him as their only hope.
