Book Reviews of Out Of Print - Treat Your Own Neck 4th Ed

Book Review: I was skeptical but.....
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a herniated cervical disk that has caused some numbness in my arm and hand. I went to physical therapy but that really aggrevated the condition. I tried this book when my numbness was getting worse. I knew the book was very short - more like a long pamphlet, but the reviews seemed great, so I said, what the heck. Well, after doing the exercises for a few months, it turns out it has really helped me. Unlike some other books, there are not a ton of exercises (which can overwelm and confuse). There are only around 8 exercises and you don't do them all, only the ones that the book tells you to do for your specific situation. I have been doing only 2 regularly. It is weird how he says to do them 7 times a day, but since it is so quick to do them and you can do them sitting down, you can do it without a major inconvenience and honestly, it has helped!

Couple of comments - my wife has neck pain but not in the spine - her pain is in a muscle to the side. The exercises didn't help her. So I would suggest people with spine issues get this book and people with muscle issues look elsewhere. Also, sometimes the author is confusing in giving complex instructions about when to do exercises (this one before that one and not if you have this pain but always if you have....). But overall you can figure it out. I found out later that the author's method is very well known among physical therapists and used by many. One of the exercises that I do is one that the physical therapist tried to get me to do but it irritated me at the time.

This book seems to be more about the short to mid term treatment of neck pain. I think the root of my problem is posture problems and while this book talks about them, it doesn't get too deep there. I may need to get another book about straightening out my posture more.

So overall I would give this book a 4.8 rating so if you have pain in the cervical spine, go ahead and pay the ten bucks and try it.

Book Review: Sounds too good to be true, but it isn't!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've suffered headaches (at temples and behind the eyes, and straining up the back of my neck), pain and stiffness of the neck and upper shoulder, and knots between my shoulder blades on either side of my spine. After trying massage (the thing that works best), pain killers and muscle relaxants, and yoga, I gave in and bought this book. I received Treat Your Own Neck only yesterday, and did the exercises after dinner. It is unbelievable how much flexibility I regained after only the first time doing them. The author predicts that first-timers will feel soreness in other areas of the body after beginning these exercises, and sure enough, I did wake up today with soreness in other parts of my back - it is akin to going to the gym for the first time in a while, and feeling the soreness from having worked out. But the flexibility remains. I've done the exercises three times now (it takes only a few minutes), and each time it makes me feel very nearly as good as the $100-a-pop hour-long massages I'd have to get in order to be able to turn my head right and left. I am sure you may be like me, finding it so hard to believe that a slim volume like this can make a difference - but it does, and what a difference it's made! It's only natural to doubt that after three days of this (as McKenzie predicts) I likely will be pain-free, but I can see that I'm well on my way, and it hasn't even been 24 hours! This is such a small investment that - at least for me - paid such huge returns. I also bought the McKenzieŽ Cervical Roll Neck Support and the The Original McKenzie Super Roll Lumbar Roll to ensure myself a more pain-free future. And I bought Treat Your Own Back for my husband.

Book Review: Best $10 ever spent
Summary: 5 Stars

This is absolutely the best $10 I have ever spent.
One night I woke up with a severe pain in my shoulder and arm. It was getting progressively worse over the next few days. My family doctor prescribed physical therapy. It helped. Six months later, the pain returned--even worse, and I lost sensation in my right thumb. Physical therapy helped, but not as much as before, and despite following the exercise regime they prescribed, the numbness in the thumb did not go away--it lasted for several weeks, the therapist said there is nothing else they can do, and I thought that I already lost it for life.
Then I came across this book. I read some reviews and decided to give it a try. I followed the exercise regime diligently. The first two exercises already produced improvements over the physical therapy results within a week. However, my thumb was still numb. When I started the third exercise, I noticed my condition improving every day--the sensation to my thumb was gradually coming back, and within a week it was almost normal.
I have been without pain in my shoulder, and with full use of my thumb, for nearly two years now. Every now and then, when I feel that something may be starting again, I do the exercises from the book a couple of times, watch my posture, and it goes away.
I spent hundreds of dollars on physical therapy and various devices to help me with the pain. Yet this little book proved to be most useful by far. I wholeheartedly recommend it. Just be sure to follow the directions and the exercise regime diligently.

Book Review: Good for herniated cervical disks, not for neck arthritis
Summary: 3 Stars

I'm suffering from recently developed, sudden onset neck arthritis. When I suddenly started noticing pain and stiffness in my neck, I saw my doctor, who recommended physical therapy, and I also looked for relief on the Internet. Through the Internet, I discovered this favorably reviewed book by Robin Mckenzie. Through my physical therapist, I discovered that my problem was neck arthritis, which is not uncommon in men of my age. Both my physical therapist and Mckenzie emphasize the importance of maintaining good posture for relieving pain and preventing further damage.

When I showed my physical therapist Mckenzie's book, he told me he had read it, that he is a great fan of Mckenzie's, but that the exercises in the book are appropriate for people with herniated cervical discs, not with neck arthritis. Indeed, before I had shown the book to my therapist, I had found that Mckenzie's exercise #2 (or the related exercise while lying on a bed) was very painful. In contrast, exercise #1, which is similar to an exercise my therapist had recommended, brought relief.

The bottom line is that I now recommend this brief, well-written book to everyone for its encouragement of good posture. I suspect that people suffering from herniated cervical discs will obtain great relief from the recommended exercises, but I warn people suffering from neck arthritis to use the exercises only with extreme caution. For neck arthritis, the recommendations of a good physical therapist are more appropriate.

Book Review: Outstanding Book!! Pain-free within a week....
Summary: 5 Stars

Outstanding book!! My pain has almost completely gone and a big thanks to Honorable. Robin McKenzie for coming out such a gem. In fact, I would go one step ahead and recommend that he deserves to get a `Noble Prize' for helping and treating back for so many people in a much simple way. I have undergone so much upper back/neck pain for the past few years and my life was miserable. The pain was unbearable and I went to depression many times which affected both my work life and family life. I couldn't concentrate much and felt like that's the end of my life. I went to several Physiotherapists who gave various treatments where I felt better but the pain again repeated. Out of frustration, I just browsed amazon.com and entered back pain and I found this book. I immediately ordered and did the exercise only for a week 10 times a day as he suggested (It lasts only 2 minutes/time totaling 20 minutes) and my pain was completely gone almost 90%. I immediately bought the neck pad and back pad which he suggested and am pain free now. The exercises are really simple and anyone can do it with minimal effort.

Please do yourself a favor. Please buy this book for $10 to be pain-free instead of spending hundreds of dollars to physio's and if at all to confirm whether you do the exercises in a right way, please do take couple of visits with McKenzie-certified physiotherapists (http://mckenziemdt.org) who will do a better job than a regular physiotherapists.
