Book Reviews of Pat the Bunny (Touch and Feel Book)Book Review: Every child should have Pat the Bunny Summary: 5 Stars
I couldn't count how many copies of this book I have purchased. The most recent was for my third grandchild due later this month. This book is the best there is for the very young child. For each of my own three children, it was a stand-out favorite that was read over and over until overuse required it be replaced. We certainly couldn't be without a copy! Since then, this book is always included whenever I give gifts to new parents.
The book is the touchy-feely type so the child explores the soft fur of the bunny, Daddy's scratchy beard, etc. The only times I hesitated buying it for a new baby was once when the mom was unwed and the father was not involved with her or the child (there is a page on Daddy's beard and one for mother's ring) and another time for a family of color since parents in the book are Caucasian.
Book Review: Not so fun for the little one Summary: 2 Stars
I thought this would be a great first book for my son since it is a "classic" and all, but the hardbook edition isn't all that fun for baby. Each page has something that the baby can see and touch i.e. he/she can actually "pat the bunny" and feel a sonft, furry bunny. Some pages are just too harsh, for example one page says baby can feel daddy's stubble or something like that, and there's a picture of a man shaving with a piece of sandpaper on his cheek! Needless to say, that page is too harsh for baby's soft skin and he didn't really like that. Other pages tell baby to put his/her finger inside a hole and do some other activities which are just bland. And the colors throughout the book are rather pale. Baby likes a lot of his other books with more mirrors and colors, and books that are soft so he can eat them!
Book Review: There are lots of better books Summary: 1 Stars
If I'd been able to see inside this book, I would not have bought it. I'm not influenced by nostalgia, so I can state that this is a really disappointment. Pages are ordinary card folded accordion style and bound only in the middle by flat binding leaving the ends unbound. Really easy to pull out and doesn't stand up to any mouthing. For 'simple line drawings' read simplistic line drawings in pastel colors. I can imagine that sixty years ago, this book would've been revolutionary, now its just passe. Baby boy, after two weeks is bored silly with it and refuses to finish reading it. He does however do two or three of the activities before lunging for one of his other books. By the way, the book is not about a bunny named Pat. Also the book comes gift boxed and shrinkwrapped which is why I couldn't return it.
Book Review: small for a baby Summary: 4 Stars
I have got to read the dimensions better on products I get! I do this a lot. It is much smaller than I had imagined. It is, as it says, 5 inches by 5 inches. I was picturing it bigger. It is a little small for my 7 month old. I will have to wait to really get use of it.
Update: My son is now one year old and the small size is good in his hands. I just got the book out again and read it to him. He likes it a lot. He liked the bunny and other interactive bits. There is a little mirror and a piece of cloth among others. I do not know how long it will last being so small and somewhat fragile, what with the card stock, double-ply pages. But it is cute and I have a better view of it now that my son is older and able to play with it more.
Book Review: Too bad your baby will destroy this within 5 seconds Summary: 4 Stars
If only this were a regular board book.... My 10 month old loves books and she loves this one in particular - every page of this book has something fun for her (well, she's not very interested in the "smell the flowers page" - but every other page). Books for babies are essentially toys - and this one is just not designed to be played with, which is a shame, because it would be perfect otherwise. After my daughter tore the cover off, I actually bought a second copy from Amazon thinking we'd be more careful with it next time. Well, the cover was off the second book within 5 minutes and the rest of the pages are following in quick succession. Get rid of the spiral bound "thick" paper and give us a regular board book already!!!!
