Book Reviews of PatriotsBook Review: The Greenwood Boys Summary: 4 Stars
Patriots (1996) is a standalone SF novel. It is set a century or so in the future, when Terrans are settling second and third tier colonies.
In this novel, Mark Maxwell is a Quelhagen gentleman taking a tour of the frontier after graduating from Harvard, He is traveling toward Kilbourn.
Yerby Bannock is a native of Greenwood. He and his sister own a spread on the planet.
Ann Bannock is Yerby's sister. She is returning to Greenwood after her schooling on Kilbourn.
Gabriel Jesilind is a medic on Greenwood. He has taken a Harvard hypnogogue course on General Knowledge.
Lucius Maxwell is Mark's father. He is a lawyer on Quelhagen.
In this story, Mark stops over on Dittersdorf on his way to Kilbourn. There he meets Yerby and Jesiland at the caravansary. Later he meets Ann over at the women's side of the facility.
Yerby becomes interested in Mark because of a set of fine dishes that he discovers in the left behind goods storage. Since Mark doesn't want the tableware, Yerby buys it for his sister. Later, Yerby helps Mark when four thugs decide to beat on him.
Yerby takes Mark with him to visit the Alliance base on the planet. They find the fort poorly maintained and very much understaffed. Still, its underground storage bays contain a multitude of forward positioned equipment and supplies left over from the Proxy Wars.
In their discussions, Mark learns that Kilbourn has become a civilized world. It even has a school of deportment for young ladies. When Yerby and Ann invite him to come to Greenwood instead, Mark hurriedly retrieves his luggage and boards the ship.
Mark soon discovers that Greenwood is settled, but not civilized. Transportation is mostly by locally made dirigibles or two-man flyers. He also finds that alcohol is an integral part of any social affair.
Mark meets Yerby's wife at the spaceport, but she has come by flyer. So they hitch a ride in a neighbor's dirigible back to the Bannock place. There Mark gets a tour of the family facility that converts native trees to plastics.
Yerby also shows Mark some beautiful spots in the area. Ann accompanies them, piloting the flyer for Mark. Then they get a radio message about a spaceship in a neighbor's soybean field.
The spaceship is from Zenith. It brings surveyors to stake out a small town of 50,000 colonists. Yerby calls for help and then confronts the ship's officers. Settlers remove all the stakes and chase the survey crew back to the ship, which then takes off.
Apparently the Greenwood settlers received land grants from the Protector of Hestia, although the planet belonged to Zenith. Then a summon arrives from the Protector of Zenith calling for the Greenwood settlers to appear before a Zenith judge.
When the Greenwood settler representatives -- and Mark -- appear before the court, their claims are summarily dismissed and the case awarded to the plaintiffs. Then Lucius appears, appeals the case to the Protector of Zenith, and gets a stay.
This tale involves Mark in several efforts to resist Zenith attempts to wrest control of the planet from the local settlers. He follows Yerby and Ann around the planet and offworld to foil these attempts. He even starts thinking of himself as a frontiersman.
The Author's Note describes Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys and the taking of Fort Ticonderoga. This novel contains some technical variations, such as spaceships instead of sailing ships. But the political situation is very much like the original story.
You probably will learn a few things about the American Revolution in Vermont from this novel. But the tale is interesting and engrossing. Read and enjoy!
Recommended for Drake fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of frontier settlers, political intrigue, and a bit of romance.

Summary of PatriotsThe corrupt Earth government is sending an army to Greenwood to remove the pioneers who discovered and settled the planet: the potential profits are too great to leave the world to scraggly ne?er-do-wells! Though the rugged individualists of Greenwood may be fractious and disinclined to agree on most things, the greedy politicians of Earth will learn a harsh lesson if they think the settlers won?t join together to save their livelihoods and homes! Under Yerby Bannock, who never walked away from a drink or a fight, the Greenwood patriots will face thugs in the night, lawyers in a distant court, traitors in their own ranks-- And, if they have to, a fortress built to shrug off the assault of a battlefleet!
