Book Review: One of a kind photography book!
Summary: 5 Stars
My only criticisms of the book have no bearing on its content. They only have to do with the design and finish, both of which are original in concept but a little weak on implementation:
--The book is compact, tightly-bound, and impossible to lay flat while open; reading it is a two-hand operation.
--The design is generally conservative: text paragraphs and captioned images. Then, randomly in most sections, there are pages with backgrounds of varying colors, a different font, and a different arrangement of the various elements. I'm not sure if these pages are meant to serve as off-the-cuff comments or emphasis of material provided elsewhere, but I find them distracting to the flow of ideas.
Otherwise, this is a one-of-a-kind photography book and still worthy of an emphatic five-star rating.
It assumes you know the technical details of photography and are familiar with your camera. Photographic principles are covered in relation to creativity in composition and execution, as are digital post-processing methods. It assumes a certain competency with photography and Photoshop or similar.
Photo Idea Index helps you visualize and implement the ideas to create original and creative photographs in your every-day life, usual environment, and with standard photographic equipment. What it does is empower and inspire your imagination and help you see subjects you might have overlooked before in a completely different way and become aware of how light, shadow, and other variables can work with you or against you in different situations.
It is effective in so many ways:
--the text is clear, well explained, always on topic, and almost encyclopedic in its scope.
--it teaches by providing many, many, original and imaginative examples that are relevant to whatever was being explained in the text.
--it covers every creative aspect of subject and composition including point of view, framing, symmetry, asymmetry, etc.
--it covers every technical aspect of composition such as lighting, lenses, focusing modes, etc.
--it covers the basic post-processing aspects of composition such as cropping, contrast and color adjustments, artistic preferences, and options such as converting to black and white or tinting.
--shows various approaches to the same subject and leaves the choice to each photographer.
--the images show the result of correct, incorrect, and optional settings as well as different angles, perspectives, lighting, etc. It's much more effective to see the variables than to read about them.
--provides clever and original photographic exercises to hone both technical and visualization skills.
It is not dated, despite being five years old, it is as fresh and relevant as it was when it was originally published. I wish I'd know about it then!
