Book Review: Presto, a perfect exam

I will be using this book for years to come, but it may not be what you expect. When most people think of an orthopaedic exam they instinctively move to special tests. This book is very, very slim on content teaching neat physical examination techniques! In fact, the book reads more like a text on palpation of superficial anatomy, and there will be a lot of disappointment if the reader is looking for much else. In fact, each chapter systematically goes through palpation, sensation, passive range of motion and active range of motion for each extremity examined. The reason behind the madness is that a great deal of an orthopaedic exam is just superficial palpation and knowing what muscle or bone your touching while the patient yelps, "ouch". This really is the bread and butter of the musculoskeletal exam taught in this book, and the more I ventured into orthopaedic rotations, the more I realized the importance of this material. That is not to say that no neat physical exam tests are in the book. In fact, each chapter ends with a brief description of key maneuvers that can help differentiate conditions. These tend to come in very handy even though only a handful of them are taught. However, the most powerful part of this book lies in the pictures! All exam maneuvers are well depicted throughout the text and almost all text has an accompanying illustration. Once a chapter has been read, the entire chapter is very easily reexamined by just looking at the illustrations. This is the first book that I have ever felt like I could comfortably obtain all of the material in a chapter in a matter of minutes by just glancing at the images to reboot my memory of when I read it, and for that it deserves 5 stars!
