Book Reviews of Piano: The Making of a Steinway Concert Grand

Book Review: The Eternal Steinway
Summary: 5 Stars

With a love of the piano since the age of five, and piano technician for the past twenty-five years, (AllegroPianoService(dot)com), I found this book to be engaging and informative. Mr. Barron follows the eleven-month journey of one Steinway D (the 9' concert grand) from raw lumber to the masterful instrument of the concert stage.

The journey starts with bending the rim; seventeen, 3cm layers of old-growth, hard rock maple from New Hampshire are glued together in one continuous strip and set in a rim-bending press--a patent of Theodore Steinway. This is followed by molding the sand-cast iron plate, shaping and fitting, the soundboard, the pinblock, stringing and, of course, the fine finish of the case. All of this handcraftsmanship is followed with the well-crafted written word in this easy to follow and inspiring read.

Barron is well informed; he knows about Reblitz's book on piano rebuilding, has taken the time to note the exact measurements of the key level, height, and dip; the hammer alignment, travel, distance from string, the repetition lever's six individual adjustments (X88 = 1,056). He looks on as the tender touch of voicing is added to give the hammer felt the full, rich, deep of the tone indicative of the unique Steinway (only marino wool is used and all the parts are made in the Steinway factory).

As well as the technicalities, we have a sound history of Heinrich Engelhard Steinway and his sons--in particular William and Theodore--who carried on the tradition of excellence and continued to create over 120 patents, now the standard of the piano industry worldwide.

Of course it is impossible to separate the Steinway family from American history and politics of the late 19th century; the sons were involved in every facet of American life from the Civil War, to setting the musical standards of the time, to NYC politics, creating the NY subway system and getting Daimler engines set up in their NY factory. Barron, with a keen eye, a tape recorder in hand, and a fluent writing style, doesn't miss a beat.

The Steinway, still made my hand as it was nearly 160 years ago, is the only piano about which sixteen independent writers have chosen to dedicate their talents. Writing a book about the Steinway is like writing a book about daVinci's work; art is art.

Summary of Piano: The Making of a Steinway Concert Grand

"Satisfying to the point of sensuousness."
--The New York Times Book Review

Like no other instrument, a grand piano melds the magic of engineering with the magic of great music. Alone among the big piano companies, Steinway & Sons still crafts each of its pianos largely by hand, imbuing each one with the promise and burden of its brand.

In this captivating narrative, James Barron of The New York Times tells the story of one Steinway piano, from raw lumber to finished instrument. Barron follows that brand-new piano--known by its number, K0862--on its journey through the factory, where time-honored traditions vie with modern-day efficiency. He also explores the art and science of developing a piano's timbre and character before its debut, when the essential question will be answered: Does K0862 live up to the Steinway legend? From start to finish, Piano will charm and enlighten music and book lovers alike.
