Book Review: A life-changing murder

Twins Kate and Abby Rose have known since they were very young that they were adopted. Their beloved "Daddy," Houston computer magnate Charlie Rose, raised them alone after his wife died when they were three, and has himself recently perished after a heart attack, leaving the girls rattling around in a big River Oaks mansion, alone except for Abby's cat Diva, Kate's dog Webster, and Ben, the yardman, who was hired only a couple of months before Charlie's death. Kate, "almost a clinical psychologist," is keeping herself busy with her work, her studies, and her fiance, who consults for the Houston PD, but Abby, who has a degree in computer science, hasn't been able to recover from the shock of Daddy's passing. When she discovers Ben dead of cyanide poisoning in the greenhouse, the sisters' lives take an unexpected turn. First it turns out that Ben was accused, years before, of murdering his first wife. As Abby tries to prove he wasn't, she discovers that Ben, and Cloris, were connected to a shady adoption-brokerage business--and that what she and Kate were told of their real parents may not have a word of truth in it.
Abby is a delightful individual, stubborn, intelligent, and unafraid to commit the odd felony in her search for truth, even if it means overturning her entire picture of her life till now. Sweeney, who is herself a Texan, paints vivid portraits of Houston, Galveston, and the entire Texan milieu, including a tropical storm that plays a major part in the story's climax. Her use of red herrings is masterful--I guessed at two perps who turned out not to be the real one--and her pace ratchets steadily upward as Abby's detections proceed. There's also the obligatory cop-annoyed-at-the-amateur's-snooping-but-impressed-by-her-guts-and-brains, as well as an attractive ex-husband who insists he's still in love with her, a family attorney determined to run her life if she'll let him, and an aunt with morals that would put Diva to shame. In the end, as the truth comes to light, Abby finds a new direction for her life, and a promising new series of mysteries begins. I definitely recommend it.
