Book Reviews of Plain Truth

Book Review: Incomplete Ending!
Summary: 2 Stars

******SPOILER WARNING*******
I just finished listening to this audio book last night and felt really disappointed by the ending. Why doesn't the author tell us what happens with Katie? Does she end up w/ Adam or Samuel? How about Ellie and Coup? Does her baby make it to full term, do they get married? And Katie's Mom's parting gift and short confession....what's up with that?? She's the one who needs to see a shrink and YES she should go to trial and be found guilty. If you murder someone, even if they have a life threatening disease, it's still murder! Did she find the baby already dead in Katie's arms, or did she really kill him herself? Overall the book was a little slow for me and I guess I enjoy books that give you a complete ending.

Get this book from the library IF you just HAVE to read it.

Book Review: Another Page Turner!!
Summary: 4 Stars

This is another fantastic book by Jodi Picoult. I am positively blow away by the degree with which her books keep a reader engaged. Plain Truth explores an alleged neonaticide that takes place within in Amish community in central PA. I went to college in Lewisburg, PA, a town located right in the midst of Amish country. I've always been curious about the intricacies of Amish life. It is clear Picoult spent a great deal of time researching this topic and in addition to answering a lot of my own questions, she tells a damn good story. I read the majority of this book in one sitting...and even the few times I put it down, I was constantly wondering what was going to happen next. A wonderful read!! Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars. Suggested With: A glass of Honey Mead and a big chair by the fireplace.

Book Review: Pulled from the headlines...
Summary: 4 Stars

A newborn baby is found, dead, in a barn located on an Amish dairy farm. After a brief investigation, 18-year-old Katie Fisher is arrested and charged with murder. Even in the face of mounting evidence, Katie denies not only the murder, but also that she had a baby in the first place.

Katie's story is intertwined with that of Ellie Hathaway, the hard-as-nails defense attorney who takes on Katie's case as a favor to her Aunt Leda.

As in other Picoult novels, the topic is pulled from the headlines and much of the story centers around Katie's trial and the inevitable twist at the end.

Well developed characters and a detailed and realistic peek into Amish life.

Book Review: An Intriguing read that will keep you guessing.
Summary: 4 Stars

In "Plain Truth" I found it very interesting to learn about the Amish, life style, religion, and beliefs. Though the setting is in a pastoral peaceful world of the Amish, the story is still riveting as ever. Again, Jodi Picoult kept be wondering as she developed all the characters. The characters seemed very familiar as I read the story and I felt a kinship with them. This read offers so much; romance, murder, courtroom drama, and so much more. All through the book I kept changing my mind on what actually happened to the baby, but never once did I guess what the ending would be. Overall, the book was an excellent, plus I was able to get a peek into the Amish culture which I found very intriguing.

Book Review: Slightly frustrating.
Summary: 3 Stars

I find Jodi Picoult's books slightly frustrating. She always starts off with an original and intriguing idea, her books are generally very well researched and she treats her subject matter with sympathy. However the dialougue can at times waver into corny territory (especially in the love scenes). My main issue with this book is the ending. It felt very improbable, rushed and slightly 'tacked on' as if as an after thought. Like all the Jodi Picoult books i've read, I did enjoy this book. However it could have been so much better if she'd cut out the love interest for Ellie which felt a bit pointless and not rushed the conclusion into the last 20 pages.
