Book Reviews of Plain TruthBook Review: Expected more Summary: 3 Stars
This was my first Jodi Picoult book to read, and after seeing so many rave reviews about this author, I must say I was a bit disappointed in her writing style. What I did enjoy was learning about the Amish and their customs, but I found the storyline to be frustrating. I also didn't really care for the characters, especially Ellie, Katie, and Adam. I thought the ending didn't really make sense. Why would Sarah do what she did trying not to lose Katie, when her actions almost sent Katie to prison for life? Just doesn't seem logical to me. I will give Jodi Picoult another chance, probably with My Sister's Keeper, and hopefully that will be better.
Book Review: Pretty good book Summary: 4 Stars
This was the first books that I've read by Jodi Picoult. I've heard many people rave about her books. I found this one on ebay fairly cheap. I read it in 3 days and it was a pretty good book. The only thing that I didn't like was it took too long to get to the trial. Also, the trial repeats everything that led up to the trial. When I was about 3/4 finished with the book I had imagined how the story was going to end...and I was correct. So, the ending was not really a surprise to me. I would recommend borrowing the book from the library or buying it on ebay like I did. Next, I will read "My Sister's Keeper". I was told that is Jodi's best book.
Book Review: "There are certain temptations..." Summary: 4 Stars
I don't usually read many trial books. But this novel had less to do with the trial and more to do with relationships. Relationships surrounding the people involved in the the birth/death of the infant that was found in the Amish family barn which set off a tragic chain of events leading to the arrest of an 18-year-old unwed girl who was born and raised "Plain". The relationships surrounding the girl's lawyer who ended up having to live with the girl for the months leading up to the trial.
It was a fascinating story about a wonderfully peace-loving people and the tragedies that befall them when the outside world gets involved.
Book Review: Interesting read Summary: 4 Stars
I read a lot of books, maybe 5 % of which are interesting and well-written enough for me to (a)read every page without skipping, and (b) read to the end. This is one of the 5% - it is my first Jodi Picoult book, and I found it, for the most part, interesting and believable (notwithstanding the criticisms of reviewers who say it is not - I don't know anything about the Amish community, but in my opinion, Ms. Picoult created a world that was believable to the reader, if not entirely accurate). I liked this book enough to want to read another one by this author, which is high praise for me!
Book Review: Good book, different topic Summary: 3 Stars
When I read the back of this book, I thought "What an interesting and different topic for a novel." It was easy to read, had likable characters and even taught me a thing or two about the Old Order Amish. I liked how Jodi wrote each chapter is a different characters first person perspective. It really helped to know them and their thoughts. While I thought there was too much romance drama and a disappointing ending, I liked this book enough to want to read the rest of Jodi's novels. I would recommend this book to a friend.
