Book Reviews of Playful ParentingBook Review: this book is awesome Summary: 5 Stars
I am so glad I found this book in a local library. However, it is so chock full of ideas to use that I think I need to buy it, because my child is just a baby now and I need to remember the many ideas as she grows. I will be re-reading it often I can tell. There's a lot in this book, all helpful, and especially touching is his advice on what not to do. As a child, my parents thought locking me in my room was good discipline. I don't forget that and needless to say our relationship is not good to this day. It's hard reading this book because my parents did a lot of the things he highlights as things to avoid, and I have to put the book down often because it's too much to digest emotionally. I wish I had had an ideal childhood, but this insightful book can help me ensure that I don't repeat those mistakes. I'm very thankful I came across it.
Book Review: Packed full of info! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a GREAT book. I have put some of the tips to use and can already see a difference in my relationship with my kids. I try to make them laugh everyday now. This book gave me SO MUCH insight that I so needed as a parent. The only thing I thought the book was missing was maybe some summary points/suggestions at the end of each chapter. All of the tips are within the stories and it is hard to remember them so I need to get a notebook to write everything I want to remember down. I am a fast reader and this book is taking a long time for me to read to absorb it all.
But a great book, full of wonderful advice and a great price. I will go back to and read again and again. Highly recommend!
Book Review: More creative ways to parent postively Summary: 5 Stars
Oh the creative ideas that flow from this book. It also explains the reasons and meaning of playing with kids. My son (2) hid under the bed after his bath the other day. I couldn't get him out no matter how I asked and positively prompted. Urgh! But......I flashed back to some of my reading. I said "Oooh, you look like a SNAKE under that bed! I am a mouse and snakes eat mice! EEK- don't eat me!!! Squeak squeak!" I got on the floor pretending to be so scared of him eating me. He immediately "slithered" hissing from under the bed to "eat" me! We both had our needs met without a hassle! Hooray!
Book Review: a very very interesting account on how to deal with discipline the positive way Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the books which you put down and think "waow, I'm going to do things differently starting now!" and you do.
Dr Cohen presents his technique towards discipline: fun and play and how it is important to relate to children through their own natural way of learning which is playing.
I've copied the techniques exemplified there and it worked wonders with my little boy.
This is definitely a MUST-HAVE for all parents concerned with respectful and positive parenting. Quite complementary to Ginott's teachings about positive education. Superb book on non violent upbringing.
Book Review: Great insight on children's play Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this book because I needed help with getting better at playing with my daughter. She always wants to play and I am busy or not in the mood. I was feeling so guilty and not a good mom that I started looking for books on how to be a better parent. After reading this book, I realized how important play is. Is not just a game but a way to build a stronger relationship with my daughter and learning what she is thinking and feeling. Through play she lets me know if she had a good day at the daycare.
I strongly recommend this book.
