Book Reviews of Pleasure

Book Review: Look past the sex.....
Summary: 5 Stars

Wow! EJD does it again. I was beginning to worry about his ability to dive into the human condition after reading the first 2 Gideon novels. This story was a return to the writer I knew so well. There are times where his descriptive writing is pure poetry. I have to admit if you read this be prepared to accept the pornographic nature of the story. (Warning: Guys don't read this book unless you have a wife or significant other to take all that sexual tension out on: my wife reaped all the benefits of this book!) The title is very self explanatory; it's a story of a woman on a reckless journey through sexual pleasure with identical twins. I was amazed by how deeply she was entrapped by the sexual world. Everything from the books she reads to the conduct of her life points to desires of the flesh. Once you get past the sex or at least set aside your moral judgments you will find yourself seeking to understand her. I wanted to know her motivations or find the source of pain. The scary part of the story is the fact that we often don't know the `why'; we just do what we do. We find a way to reconcile the hypocritical lives we live in order to keep our sanity. The questions are the same: Can a woman have sex without love? Why doesn't a successful woman settle down and marry? Why does a woman prefer not to be attached to a family or submit her desires to expectations? Often we don't like the simple answer; "Just because I want to do it". The answer doesn't make us feel good as a people it rubs against the structure of our society. This book puts that question and answer on display. My only problem with most of EJD's novels is the disregard of safe sexual practices. It could mislead some new readers in the world.
Finally, I recommend that you look into Henry Miller and Anius. EJD references both authors and I have to agree Miller's Sexus, Nexus, and Plexus are interesting reads. Expand your reading world, I often use author references to find a new author.
5 of 5 stars for a great EJD novel.

Book Review: hmmmm....
Summary: 3 Stars

Nia Simone Bijou is a successful Trinidadian writer that in my opinion confused about what she wanted. The twins Kyle and Karl are sick in my opinion. i know brother's men etc share exploits but to keep doing so while grown men is beyond repulsive. how can you marry a woman that has slept with you and your brother but more importantly only settled for you because since she couldn't have your brother?

I like that he bought Jewell Stark back into the fold her crying and being depressed in the last installment of the Gideon trilogy bought closure to her character. KiKI sunshine was another dissapointment. I think the characters were all nympho's and that should've been addressed.

I appreciate where EJD was trying to go with this one. I love how his writing has evolved but the only thing Pleasure offered was behaviors that have blacks being the ones leading with cases of HIV. I love good sex but i feel the book could've at least had them being accountable for their actions by being responsible. Logan although an arrogant tyrant was the only one to call a spade a spade.

I've read all of EJD's books and will continue too. i hope that the next book will have me flipping the pages like they're on fire like the others. Pleasure failed to do that took me 4 months to read this book. had to stop and read others in between it. i'm an avid reader so i can normally knock out 2 to 3 books a week so that says a lot about Pleasure.

once i finally got to the end i was left wondering what was the point? was it pleasure? was it fulfilled? was she going to continue, get a life, have children get married? WHAT? for a woman so self assured and educated she was dumb when it came to her most prized possesion and that was her body. again it's okay to have multiple sexual partners not slamming EDJ for that but i just wished he made it to where she was being responsible.

Book Review: Oh So Hot
Summary: 4 Stars

Nia Simone Bijou is a woman dealing with an internal dilemma. On the one hand she is a successful independent, well educated writer dealing with normal issues of life. On the other hand Nia is a sensual woman with a burning desire to fulfill her need for Pleasure. The need for Pleasure will take Nia down roads she never thought she would travel and teach her that pursuit of pleasure can have both great rewards and great consequences.

I enjoyed Nia's sexual exploration and admired the courage it took for her to step out of her comfort zone to fulfill her desires. Nia was willing to test her boundaries to achieve the ultimate goal of pleasure despite what society would think of her and her pursuit for sexual fulfillment. In Nia, Eric Jerome Dickey created a character that embodies the essence of the modern successful female. She lives her life on her own terms, based on a standard set by her belief system not society's rules. It is this attitude that opens her to her pursuit of pleasure and takes her and the reader on an unforgettable journey.

I truly enjoyed Pleasure. This will definitely be one of my favorite reads of the year. The Erotic scenes were hot without being raunchy and tasteless. All the characters in this story came alive. They were well rounded individuals living real lives filled with their own stories and following their own agendas. I wanted to know made these characters tick and what events put them in Nia's world as she struggled to deal with her own desires. The story itself had me thinking beyond the actual words and sex scenes to my own personal life journeys. Would I be willing to cross my own personal boundaries to achieve my own personal goals.

Book Review: Not my favorite EJD book
Summary: 2 Stars

I have read all of EJD's books and have mixed emotions on his progression. I love his style, his use of words (even if I have to use a dictionary!) and his descriptions but sometimes I find my self annoyed by it. I did not care for SWS or WWE. It took me FOREVER to get through them. I almost put this one down but being a fan, I had to push ahead. I was disappointed that my public library wasn't carrying this novel and now that I've read it I can see why.

In spite of his use of alternative sexual terms, porn is porn! I'm not a prude so I wasn't offended by it but readers should beware that it is extremely graphic. These characters are the most sexually responsive women/characters. You can tell this was written by a man! I thought that it was irresponsible for all of this sexual activity to be happening and no one, not one time, ever mentioned using or ever did use condoms! Very irresponsible!! Details like that, and like in Genevieve where the main character was smoking weed while pregnant, annoy me.

I didn't care for any of the characters so it was hard for me to care what happened to them. I thought the story jumped around, I really couldn't grasp the time span of the book (was it one week, a month...?), Nia was successfully employed but she hardly worked, I didn't 'get' Logan and his history with Nia, not sure how I felt about her mother, nor did I ever really fully tie in the Hampton Univ. drama. I skipped the last 3-5 or so pages because they did not interest me.

As a fan, I'm going to always give EJD a chance but this was perhaps my least favorite book of his.

Summary: 5 Stars

Pleasure is an amazing story of a woman in search of self. Nia Simone is a strong, independent and fearless woman. She is comfortable in her own skin and she is unapologetic for embracing her sexuality. Nia Simone rejects a marriage proposal from a man who on paper appears to be any woman's Mr. Right and she instead goes on this journey of self discovery. Along the way she has encounters with people, men as well as a woman, each encounter leaving her bolder than it found her. The longer she engages on this pleasure trip, the louder the sound of the pain train becomes. As I was reading, I knew something or someone was going to come along to rock her world. I wanted to yell "Something wicked this way comes!" What eventually ends up happening was something so unexpected I had to go back and re-read the chapter before it to try and figure out what I had missed.

I loved this book because so many times I found myself gasping out loud. As with most of Dickey's books, I felt as though I knew these characters. I felt as thought I was watching a movie. End the end, Nia seems to realize the power and the beauty of her feminine and sexual nature.

This has got to be my favorite EJD novel to date. I never wanted to put this book down. I saw so much of who I am in this character. Some of the things she said reminded me of words I have spoken.

This book is very well written and is an absolute MUST HAVE.

If you do not already own this book, stop what you are doing and order it now!
