Book Reviews of PleasureBook Review: Banging...Literally Summary: 2 Stars
Well, after months of checking and rechecking this out from the library, I finally sat down to read and in between shifting haunches, making faces, and shaking my head, my final verdict is this is one long, raunchy, long, graphic, long book about nothing.
Once I got past the continuous sex, which didn't stop until the last few chapters, I asked myself, "Now, really, what is/was the point?" OK, so it's about a woman who is enjoying uninhibited sexual pleasure in various forms with many people, but by the time I had that revelation, maybe after sexcapade number 3, I was really tired of reading about Nia Simone. I did finish the book, all 400+ pages, but it's not something I will ever read again.
One thing I'll say about EJD, his writing has sure moved from the "tame" to the more "out there" and his subject matter keeps changing. I can't say he's my favorite author, but it sure seems funny that I always gravitate to his stuff when I'm browsing the library shelves. I usually find something of his that I haven't read. Chasing Destiny is in the queue.
2.5 stars for Pleasure. It just wasn't a pleasure to read at all, even if it did make me squirm a little bit. :-)
Book Review: Pleasure not a pleasure to read Summary: 1 Stars
I've read a couple of EJD'S earlier books,Cheaters and Between Lovers for example, books that had meaning and substance, some of his later books had those qualities as well , BUT, his book Pleasure, I don't know what the hell happened. The story was pointless, plotless and a waste of time to read. Way way too much sex between the pathetically self-absorbed and desperate female protaganist and these sorry, nondescipt twin dudes, I mean these guys are supposed to be sexy professionals in their early 30's and they do some kindergarten crap like rock scissors to see which one will get the female protagonist first, how dumb is that! There's more silliness that I just don't feel like mentioning. The main characters in the story had no real outside interests other than to have sex with each other and that's it, and then EJD throws in some stuff about Anais Nin, erotica author from back in the day,to give the story depth, yeah okay.Obviously, it's not a good book, read it at your own risk if you must, and those of you who have young teenage daughters,PLEASE don't allow them to read it, not only because of the sex but because the characters have IRRESPONSIBLE sex, nobody uses condoms!
Book Review: Simply Smokin' Summary: 5 Stars
PHEW!!! All I can say is that this story is, simply put, the hottest piece of work EJD has ever written! It smokes. From its inception, the story grabs you.
As a writer, you can learn a great deal from his rhythm with words, his tight delivery via dialogue and limited use of first person, feminine, narrative. That he captures the unadulterated lust of his female protagonist is amazing. if you enjoyed THE OTHER WOMAN, fasten your seatbealts: THIS ONE, IN TERMS OF EROTICA, is way better.
EJD shows that some men understand a woman's blend of sexual independence and confusion. Elevating the writing bar once more he incorporated sexual techinique by way of Kama Sutra, something I was saying for a long time needed to be done in Black Erotica. I loved Nia Simone Bijou, his female protagonist. Enjoying her erotic confusion, EJD and PLEASURE takes it to another level, leaving readers in awe of yet another unforgettable journey. Flammable is an understatement with this one. Excellent writing says it all.
That MICHAEL JACKSON analogy had me rollin'!!! Great job!
Book Review: It was my PLEASURE Summary: 5 Stars
All I have to say is CAN YOU PLEASE KEEP DOING WHAT YOU'RE DOING. This book was great. I have to admit when he first came to the scene I was not fond of his books. They were a little to trivial and stereotypical for my taste, but now -- these characters have grown on me like when I first started watching Sex and the City. There is a level of familiarity that does not allow me to 'neatly' tuck this one away and read it on a rainy day -- NO, I finished this book within 3 days (unheard of for me because I'm inundated with other things). But, I had to finish Pleasure.
I read it during lunch, in the bathroom, at the stop light -- I even found myself sneaking in a read like I used to do with my parent's Richard Pryor albums (flashback).
Anywho --- E.J. keep it up. As a budding literary artist myself you have joined my list of erudite literary visionaries. I broodingly await the arrival of Dying for Revenge. I am certain that I will be as intensely satisfied with this one as I have been with the rest.
Book Review: Trying too hard!!!! Summary: 1 Stars
It's obvious to almost anyone who has read the last 3 books by EJD that he is impressed with his newfound vocabulary and ability to travel abroad. I'm all for expanding my horizons but this was just too much. The main character was not interesting at all. There was nothing in this book that made me care about her or the other characters. Nia comes across as nothing more than EJD's idea/fantasy of a perfect woman. I've been able to travel and socialize with people from different backgrounds so I'm not impressed with EJD's descriptive details on what he thinks are high-end or exclusive hotels, stores etc. Maybe he should spend more time developing more realistic characters and less time trying to impress his readers with his knowledge of words and the latest hot spots.I've only read 100 pages or so but so far I am not thrilled with this latest effort by EJD.
