Book Review: Concentrated info to enhance your wine tasting abilities

Professor Ann C. Noble created the Wine Aroma Wheel in 1990, and it has become something of a wine lover's "must have". It is based in part on Wines - Their Sensory Evaluation by Maynard A. Amerine and Edward B. Roessler. All three were important members of the faculty at UC Davis, and instrumental in various ways in the growth of the California wine industry.
De Long is quick to point out the value of the Wheel: "The Wine Aroma Wheel is a classic of wine education - I still have mine and found it extremely handy. Like anything, however, there's always room for improvement. I would like to think of our Wine Tasting Guide as the latest and greatest of wine tasting tools that began with the Aroma Wheel."
The Guide has a number of advantages over the Wheel: 216 versus 114 terms, 22 versus 13 grape varieties, more detailed descriptions of the terms, and pocket sized. De Long also offers free wine forms on his website. Deborah De Longs are also responsible for the beautiful De Long's Wine Grape Varietal Table and have created the Wine Century Club: "If you've tried at least 100 grape varieties, you're qualified to join."
As an experienced wine taster and wine tasting note writer -- 15 years and over 50,000 notes -- I still find it useful to review the Wheel from time to time. The Guide is more useful, and portable to boot. If you love wine and want to improve your tasting abilities, get a copy of each.
