Book Reviews of Point Blank (FBI Thriller)Book Review: "Point Blank"?? Summary: 3 Stars
To start off, I am mildly amused that the title to this book, "Point Blank", really has nothing to do with the story. Maybe if you've read this book you can make your own interpretations, but my point is that the author makes none. I guess she just needed to title the book with something that enticed people to pop the cover; sort of funny.I kind of enjoyed this book. I am a reader who has lost touch with reading, but I want to make a comeback. This is one of the first books I read during my comeback. Although I could honestly say that I, for lack of a better work, "enjoyed" this book. It left me relatively empty inside; that should not be.
A typical reader would be very satisfied after they closed the back cover of a good book and also have much thoughts mulling through their gray matter about the story's many twists and turns for a while after they finished the book. This story seemed markedly dull to me and, as another reviewer mentioned, the finale was left open ended....no closure. Is it to be continued? This is the only book I have ever read by Mrs. Coulter and I'm afraid it leaves me with low regards to her ability to spin a good web. However, I should not be over-critical seeing how she is an accomplished writer and I'm obviously not. She may very well have some books that are much better and it was my luck that I picked a mediocre one simply because of the beguiling "Great Read...Guaranteed" stamp on the cover.
(Spoiler Alert): Don't read below if you intend to read this book.
Some of the points of dissatisfaction that I encountered in the book were:
1.The dual-case plot. In the start we read of a old maniac Moses Grace and his troubled companion Claudia wreaking havoc for Agent's Savich and Sherlock, then we read of a mysterious chain of murders that rock the town of Maestro. This could have been a gripping tale were it not for Coulter's failure to connect the two cases. After reading the book, it does seem far-fetched that these to stories could end up being tied together, but the way both sides were handled really took away from a better story this could have been. The conclusion to both cases does not really impact the reader with the force that the climax of a good book should.
2. Development of characters and dialogue was uninspired. When I read a good book, the fantastic descriptions actually make somewhat of a movie in my head, but it really wasn't happening for me on this one. At least Ruth and Dix should have had a little deeper development.
3. And as I mentioned, the ending was not as great as I hoped. The villain in Maestro was not actually "caught"...he sort of slinked off; what a rip off. Also, the development between Ruth and Dix was not really finished. Did they hook up?
Leaving my nit-pickings aside, I still feel that this was an OK read. I know I certainly cant write a book like this. However, I have become a tad bit adept at critiquing an authors work, mainly because of my English classes at school.
Final Verdict: 3 stars. I recommend this title to people who are great fans of Catherine Coulter and to prolific readers who can breeze through a stack of books with ease. If you crave deep, convoluted plots with masterful imagery and meticulous character development, you are better off finding another title.
