Book Reviews of Point of ImpactBook Review: Great read Summary: 5 Stars
Stephen Hunter wrote 3 Bob Lee Swagger novels. Point of Impact is the first of the series and the first of Hunter's books I read on a long flight to the west coast. I sat up until I finished the story, all 560+ pages. There is no higher praise than lost sleep. Bob 'the nailer' is a former Viet Nam sniper who gets set-up by a shadowy quasi govenment/milatary group to take the fall for an assassination. Instead, the supposedly dead Bob 'the nailer' goes after the puppet masters. Hunter's attention to detail and remarkably adept weaving of mutiple story lines are impressive. Perhaps the best part is Hunter's endings. Just when you think it's done, another one comes along. To quote a character "..I've never met anyone who could outsly a sly old country boy." And Bob Lee Swagger is one sly country boy. Absolutely wonderful. Do read all three books and consider the prequels featuring Bob Lee's father, Earl Swagger.
Book Review: Read It Summary: 4 Stars
Point of Impact by Stephen Hunter is a great example of how one decision can change your life. The author uses great literary techniques to make the reader really feel what's going on.
The book starts out when Bob Lee Swagger (ex-sniper US marines) is asked to come out of retirement and do one more mission.
The plan was to assasinate a high esteemed Russian leader. The job was executed perfectly but things go bad when Bob finds out the plan was not just to kill the boss but also to kill him. Bob then spends his time trying to kill the people who tried to take his life away.
The only people Bob trusts are a young woman named Sarah and another young man named Nick. Everyone else has either betyrayed him or been killed.
The two then help Bob with his plan. But things go ary when Sarah is kidnapped.
This is a great book for those who like the Tom Clancy style without all the political talk.
Book Review: Phenomenal Summary: 5 Stars
There simply are not enough superlatives to describe Point of Impact. This was a phenomenal book, clearly among my personal top-five list. In Point of Impact, Hunter presents Bob Lee Swagger (AKA "Bob the Nailer" due to his reputation as a Marine sniper during the Vietnam War) in a fast-paced conspiracy thriller. Hunter hooks you in the first few pages of the book as Swagger is hunting on his property in Arkansas. As the story unfolds, Swagger demonstrates the physical and mental toughness, decisiveness, patience, perseverance, and survival instincts that made him the best at what he does. Throughout the book, one comes to know and further appreciate the intricacies, both positive and negative, of being "Bob the Nailer." Action sequences and character development are interwoven and provide a complementary blend throughout the book. From start to finish, this book is impossible to put down.
Book Review: Excellent Summary: 5 Stars
Read the book, then see the movie version, SHOOTER.
Enough has been said about Bob Lee Swagger. Snipers, good ones that is, are a special breed. Most people could not begin to endure what a sniper goes thorough to get "the shot." Steven Hunter does a good job off making "Bob the nailer" a real sniper.
I liked the plot and pace of the book. I can usually find technical errors in this genre of novels, some quite laughable. Only found one incorrect technical term (you find it) which may be attributed to the editor. It was a pleasure to hear the term cartridge rather than bullet. Hunter's description of long distance shooting was very good.
I recommend reading this book when you can devote several hours to it. Its hard to put down.

Book Review: High-Octane Action Thriller Summary: 5 Stars
Wow, another 5-star review for "Point of Impact." The sheer number of 5-star reviews should strongly suggest that this is a book not to be missed. Two things are a certainty about author Stephen Hunter: 1) he knows his guns; and 2) he knows how to write fast-paced, action-oriented, plot-twisting thrillers. Anyone who is not yet familiar with master sniper Bob Lee Swagger will soon be.
This time the loner Bob Lee Swagger is coaxed out of retirement to perform one last service for his country - to assassinate a would-be assassin before he can complete his contract. But nothing is as straight-forward as it appears to be. And somewhere along the line Swagger is forced to reluctantly team with FBI agent Nick Memphis in order to unravel the series of events. But no spoilers here. Read "Point of Impact" and you'll guarantee yourself one thrilling ride.
