From experience I have learned that it is always good to start at the beginning of a series and not the middle or the end, but in the case of James Patterson and his character Alex Cross, I started somewhere in the middle and keep hopping around. Each time I worry that I have forgotten who Alex Cross is, but there are always tidbits about him that remind me. Also, the stories in the series are totally stand alone stories that just so happened to this one guy and his partner.
Alex Cross is in love with his girlfriend Christine and his world is coming together. She is afraid that his work is too dangerous and is apprehensive of marrying him. Alex is working on multiple murders in Washington D.C. which to most don't appear to have a pattern or particular link. But Alex is determined to find the connection. This leads him to pursue a British diplomat named Geoffrey Shafer and the story that ensues has twists and turns in the pursuit of bringing to justice the one who has become nicknamed the Weasel.
This was a good story if you have never read another novel by James Patterson or even one in his Alex Cross series. Like most of his work, the chapters are very short which keep to turning pages and saying...just one more chapter before bedtime. If you already enjoy other James Patterson novels, this is not one to miss.
The killer is a well respected foreign dignitary who also has a passion for role playing games. He, along with three others throughout the world are members of an exclusive game called the four horsemen. How Cross comes to his identity and possible capture is a series of non stop chills. The ending may not be as topsy turvy and dramatic as other Patterson books, but some surprises do change the complexion of future Cross novels.
Patterson sticks to his format here. The positive aspect is that his fans know the characters and enjoy their continuing saga. Sampson has developed into the type of figure that would be extraordinary in his own book. The negative aspect is that some of Cross's statements and the details of his family life are a bit worn on the faithful Patterson fan. As a result, the Alex Cross novels could use an injection of freshness. Therefore the novel was a bit shy of the better Cross chapters.
Overall the book has a quick flow and only sputters in some of the chapters that surround Alex's relationship with Christine. The villain is devious but also falls short of a Gary Soneji or Jack and Jill. The plot is better than average and I am still left wanting more Alex Cross. A no brainer four star piece of fiction.
In this installment Alex Cross is called upon to solve a string of murders that initially do not look like serial killings. Then, they do and he is off and running trying to prevent more of the same. The premise Patterson uses here is that the murders are being committed by a mid-level diplomat assigned to the British embassy in Washington. The murders, part of a sophisticated computer game played by four members or former members of British intelligence is played on a global scale. It makes for an interesting plotline and almost works.
However, as another reviewer here stated, too many coincidences fall into place and Alex Cross is able to easily put the pieces together to solve these heinous crimes. This is probably not the best of the Alex Cross novels for that reason.
Yes, Patterson has all of the pacing that existed in his past entries in the series, but the ending was just too pat and less than believable. This is definitely a beach book or one for a quick airplane flight. Not a truly memorable installment, but I'd bet they'll still make a movie out of it anyway.
I wouldn't NOT read this entry in the series, but I also wouldn't expect the same quality of taut writing and interesting story found in KISS THE GIRLS. Mr. Patterson may have run out of steam with this one.
Alex Cross is an exciting character to read about. Thank God for the availability of SOME BLACK HEROS. I know that they exist, but, do others know this. One way of proving it is through authors like James Patterson. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Alex Cross certainly was not going to let some measley British Intellegence Official out smart him and continue killing off Washington, D.C. citizens. Why the great seat of government would be embrassed should such an act take place. Alex Cross seems to be the precursor to the present day Montgomery County Chief Charles A. Moose. Moose, as most of us know, soared to the front of the international news scene when in 2002 he captured the infamous BELTWAY SNIPER MURDER CRIMINAL in the Washington, D.C./Maryland/Virginia areas. It wouldn't surprise me if Chief Moose took his directions from Alex Cross. (smiles)
Needless to say, I highly recommend this book and I also recommend all of the Alex Cross series. I sure will be reading each and every one.
