Book Reviews of Pop Goes the Weasel

Book Review: Book 5 in a series of 8 with no end in sight?
Summary: 3 Stars

I read this book because I'd already read the rest of the series, and I'm in the process of reading Roses are Red and plan to read Violets are Blue as well as the upcoming Four Blind Mice. The story never really develops like it should in regards to Alex Cross's fiancee and the ending is all too convenient and rather hollow. If you read it you'll know what I'm talking about. Not a page turner like previous books in the series. I haven't bought a single of Patterson's books yet, I've allowed my local library to provide the free service of providing me with his works. I'd recommend you do the same, as you'll soon figure out if you haven't already, the Alex Cross series is all too predictable and you might soon find yourself where I am. Following the series out of mere curiosity to see if it's going to go somewhere interesting, and you don't mind spending a few evenings to read through the book. I'm tiring of Cross's fairytale family life which conflicts drastically with his unstable rollercoaster professional life. I'm going to stick this series out, but if you've not started reading the series, read the first four and quit while you're ahead.

Book Review: Just AWFUL!
Summary: 2 Stars

I've been a voracious reader of this genre for decades and have previously read some of Patterson's books. Some were okay and some were not. I listened to this one on audio tape. What a disappointment!

Pedestrian prose, icky sweet romanticism, plot holes galore, lack of cohesiveness and way too long. There are even errors in the writing/editing that annoyed me. Was Shafer once mistakenly called "George" instead of "Jeffrey" in the book, or only on the tape? If I can catch these mistakes, why can't the editors?

It's annoying and unrealistic reading about yet another "perfect" protagonist. Cross is the best detective, the best father, the best lover, the best friend. Everyone (except the bad guys) loves him to pieces - he has no flaws. His children are cute, clever, talented and well-behaved. The villain, Shafer, is evil beyond redemption. The girlfriend is smart, gorgeous, sexy and willing. Every character is totally one dimensional. Puhleeeze!

I will never read (or listen to) another Patterson novel. There are far too many better writers out there to waste time on this author.

Book Review: Not that good
Summary: 1 Stars

Being that POP GOES THE WEASEL was a best seller I expected a good read, but that was not the case.

Patterson's dialog at times is clumsy and awkward.

I didn't care about hearing Alex's kids blabber. It would have been better if the kids were not in the story at all.

Patterson meanders. Plot twists were too perdictable.

I don't give a darn about what she wore or what he wore or detailed descriptions of all the contents in a room... many writers do this and I find that it interrupts the story.

And Patterson should get someone else to write the love scenes... "Oh Alex, oh Alex. I love you. I love you so much. Don't stop, please don't stop. Oh my darling Alex."

Oh yeah... I lived in the UK and still have several friends who live there, and no Brit I ever knew used the word "chap". That term is only used in 1930s Hollywood movies. Patterson had better get out in the real world more often.

All in all the book was -- BORING!

I will NOT be buying another James Patterson novel, even if he is the great, best selling author.

Book Review: Author has done much better

This book could have been much better. SPOILERS AHEAD

First off, MI6 didn't decide they didn't need any more agents after the end of the cold war and lay off all their spies. Geoffrey Shafer, the insane drug addled killer, is WAY too crazy to escape notice working as a secret agent. Here is a hint - I can assure you that MI6 and CIA agents working out of embassies in foreign countries don't see shrinks on a nightly basis that are in private practice and citizens of the host country! The idea that FOUR agents would all go bad at once and turn to a role playing game over the internet to brag about their serial killing ways is a bit over the top as well. Anyone who has been to Bermuda would also doubt that a kidnapping and removal of the victim from the island would be all that likely without detection. There are only so many ways off the island and it about 600 miles from anyplace else. This novel also totally ignores forensic science. With the killers secret apartment and car discovered there would have been enough DNA and other trace evidence to keep all the versions of CSI running for years!
