Book Reviews of Posture AlignmentBook Review: Noticed a Dramatic Diffrence in how I feel in just three weeks. Summary: 5 Stars
The Author of this book coaches you through everything in the simplest terms possible. The basic theory of the book is that our bones become misaligned (forward head or twisted pelvis for example) because our muscles become stiff and weak from lack of use. our bones actually shift when they are weak to acomodate the demands placed on our bodies.
To be more specific, we have pairs of muscles on either side of our joints that move them in opposite directions, whether it be our hips wrists, Knees shoulders ect. When we use our joints, the muscles on one side contract and the muscles on the other relax. Muscle imbalances on both side of a joint cause the bone to be pulled out of alignment.
I have seen many people-- even before I read this book--with forward heads, feet that were tilted outwards like a duck or excesivly inward and shoulders that were uneven. The goal of alignment is to get our bodies back into their proper sympatry and thus restore function and mobility to our joints.
a forward neck for example, puts strain on your shoulders, upper back and neck which limits its mobility, and requires greater energy to maintain. Every postural misalignment puts strain on other parts of the body, thus using unessesary energy. Arezo teaches you how to access yourself for misalignments and then tells you exactly how to fix them with exercises. He guides you through step by step with clear illustrations for every exercise. At most they will take you half an hour. He has different exercise menus for different postural misalignments. He even has short menus that help overall alignment.
The great thing about Posture Alignment is that the author tells you exactly how you will feel after doing the exercises and what to expect from them. This is really the least intensive and effective home solution for anyone with postural problems.
He makes good sense. This is the best sum of money I have ever spent in a personal effort to correct my own postural problems and back pain. I couldn't have asked for anything more.
The Posture Alignment theory, has proved its worth in working wonders for my posture and how I feel. I am very surprised that I can feel the difference, and others can see the difference in such a short time.
I cannot in good conscience give this anything but what it deserves. Five stars.
Book Review: Helpful, encouraging book to improve posture Summary: 5 Stars
Posture Alignment by Paul D'Arezzo is the best exercise book I've seen for improving posture. I'm a 53-year old female who has been having problems with back and neck pain and then injured my shoulder, and I started questioning whether my increasingly poor posture was a major contributor to my problems. Yes! Dr. D'Arezzo very engagingly explains the problems caused by improperly-aligned posture, gives instructions on how to do a self-assessment, and provides well-explained and illustrated exercises to help correct problem posture. He provides 19 "Posture Alignment Menus" to choose from. The menus vary from 1 to 42 minutes to work through. I have been doing a combination of two menus, "Asymmetry of Shoulders and Hips-One Shoulder or Hip Higher than the Other" and "Rounded Shoulders and Upper Back," and I'm pleased with the improvement in my posture and in how I feel. I am recommending this book to all my friends. I have a 50-year old developmentally-disabled brother who is becoming very round-shouldered and inflexible because of his low activity level, so I worked with him using the "Function Menu" to help him to strengthen muscles he uses in everyday living, and he really enjoyed the whole exercise routine.
Beside providing exactly the information I needed to address my physical problems, Dr. D'Arezzo's book provides wonderful encouragement that I think anyone trying to make a significant change will appreciate. This book is absolutely terrific!
Book Review: Disappointed Summary: 2 Stars
The bulk of this book is the author selling you on the importance of good posture, and introducing you to some general principles. It's basically one long introduction. It almost reads like an advertisement for an e-book, where you keep reading in hope of finding some actual content. I read one chapter, skimmed through the rest, and then came to the end, where he lists a bunch of different stretching and excercise routines that you can choose based on what you think you need. That's okay, but that kind of thing I can view for free with a little google searching, so it's not worth my money.
If you want to find a good book on posture that really teaches you something about your body, try The New Rules of Posture by Mary Bond.
Book Review: There are much better books out there Summary: 1 Stars
After reading all the positive reviews, I expected a much better book. The first seven chapter are an utter waste of time concerned primarilly with convincing the reader that posture allignment is a good idea. Despite his M.D. credentials I found the author's science to be extremely dubious. He implies that postural allignment will cure and prevent a host of problems, many of which are common maladies of the aging process. The second half of the book was filled with exercises, but so many are listed, it is difficult to determine what would be an appropriate program for your needs. A much much better book is Posture, Get it Straight by Janice Novak. She also has an exercise DVD.
