Book Reviews of Practical Candleburning Rituals: Spells and Rituals for Every Purpose (Llewellyn's Practical Magick Series)Book Review: classic, but dated and rather dissapointing Summary: 2 Stars
I have to give this book 3 stars at least because it is a classic, even if it is dated. By dated I mean that when you read newer books whose reviews mention that the author doesn't preach to you with absolutes and a one-way-only-to-do-it mindset, they are probably talking about a book like this. Before I get to my problems with the book, I have to say some good things about it. The amulet/talisman consecration spell is well written and great for its intended purpose. Personally I use talismans like crazy, so I can appreciate this one. There is also a great uncrossing spell, as well as a separate prosperity, money, and success spells.
My problems with it:
In candles, (according to Buckland), black means evil, somehow blue is healing, purple is power and strength. To me, these color definitions seem way off, and Buckland doesn't even say to do what feels right for you, or to use your intuition. Black robes are also bad according to him. Every other source on candle magick I've ever seen puts black in the protection and harm reversal category. I've even used black candles to repel bad spirits trying to attach to me after graveyard hikes. Overall the rituals in this book are very simple, it's all totally the sympathetic type of magick, using multiples of candles instead of any other materials. (besides incense).
The format of every spell includes a candle to represent the target, two altar candles, and multiple other candles that you position around the target to affect that person or their specific situation. For example, 4 green candles that represent money are set around a white candle that represents the target person, plus other candles and colors might be used to augment that particular thing happening. You will go through a LOT of candles with this book. I'm certain that most of these spells could be done just as well with less consumable materials, such as stones/crystals, or wax/clay dolls to represent the people or situations you would want to affect with a spell.
In this book he briefly mentions using herbs and oils to dress the candles, (middle to ends dressing only) but does not even mention writing names or words of intent on the bottoms of any candle. There is little mention of even charging candles with intent or energy, besides a few lines on using visualization right before you actually lite each candle. In particular, he even says that it's ok to blow out a candle, but that you should never pinch it out. Any experienced magician would know that that last line contradicts one of the most important things to remember when using candles for anything, NEVER BLOW THEM OUT. Let them burn out, pinch them out, snuff them out, or use a stick or piece of metal to push the lit wick into the liquid wax. (my preferred method)
There are a number of negative spells that are detailed, such as breaking up a love affair, instilling jealousy, tormenting an enemy, etc. While I don't personally have a problem with any book mentioning these types of spells, the fact they are here is something you should know about before buying this book. At the beginning he even mentions that it is a book about magick and witchcraft, and not Wicca, as a Wicca book would not likely detail ways to cause harm.
Bottom line, I would probably buy a different book if you are interested in candle magick, and definitely if you are a serious magician or occultist. Christopher Penczak, Scott Cunningham, and hell, even Silver Ravenwolf have better and more sensical ways to do candle magick.
