Book Reviews of Princess Sultana's Daughters

Book Review: Excellent read
Summary: 4 Stars

This book shows true revealing information about the going on in Saudia Arabia. We find out that throughout that what you do comes back to you and comes in a form of children. Two daughters- one who defys being dominated by men and another who defys both her sister and mother defying men. This daughter becomes a strict muslim- who is devouted to religion and the rigidity of it. Mrs. Princess wonders how she raised such a daughter and often shows her weariness of her- but I believe seems to not realize that her daughter was crying out for help.

She wanted her mother to independent but to also notice that she was a muslim mother. This is my speculation not a fact. The books goes deeper into all the characters. Again, I will say, that she speaks to much about her daughters business. I still feel the same way- she should have stuck to her life and although her children are her life- they have a right to privacy. I could imagine the devestation of telling the whole world that one of her daughters had a sexual relationship with another woman could be hurtful and harmful as she gets older.

The book is a quick read. Mrs. Princess is growing up finally, and to be honest- getting the rude awakenings that most women should- that the world is about being a part of a whole and working towards peace together.

I would recommend the Sultana's Circle, Not Without My Daughter, Between Defiance and Restraint.

Book Review: Sleepless in New York City
Summary: 5 Stars

I didn't get any sleep for a week once I made the discovery of these Princess books.

A true life story brought to our reality by author Jean Sasson who lived and worked in a hospital in Saudi Arabia. She lived there from 1978 until 1990--12 years. During those 12 years, she came to know a number of women who had to veil everytime they left their homes. These are women whose husbands are unknown to them until the night of their wedding!

In these books you hear how this environment affects individual lives, as well as you learn a LOT about the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

After 9/11 every person in the world should be interested in that country and the lives they live that creates such personalities.

Take a Princess, mix her in a royal Kingdom, add wealth, tragedy, happiness and misery, and you have a turn-paging drama. Jean Sasson has a marvelous way of making you care about these women who are so wealthy and spoiled that your palms often itch to smack them. Yet, you CARE...

Thanks to this author for her compelling way of bringing Saudi Arabia and the people in the country, to life... It's a fun-filled lesson to read these books.

Book Review: Moving...
Summary: 4 Stars

I read this book without having read 'Princess: A true story of life behind a veil in Saudi Arabia' and can say without that background I found it exceptional, disturbing, but still exceptional. I find it interesting to know the intricacies of how people from cultures different to mine live. Having an appreciation of Islam myself, it is, in my opinion not the religion that is the 'excuse' for the behaviour of the males in this publication, but simply, I suggest, tradition, and if I can be so crude as to say, 'pig-headed, male arrogance'!
It deeply saddens me to know that women all over the world, not just in Saudi Arabia are treated with less respect than their male counterparts and I am dissappointed in the human race when people behave in this way. I can say proudly and with experience that the middle eastern countries I have visted, the middle eastern families I stayed with, and the middle eastern men I met, (and one I married) would never 'ever' dream of treating women in the way this book details.
Definately worth a read!

Book Review: Princess Sultana Stories - Big Giant Winner
Summary: 5 Stars

The life of Princess Sultana - all the three books by Jean P. Sassoon on this woman's life - have been such that I found it difficult to put them down. Sultana is so very frank about her weaknesses and shortcomings (especially her hatred of her brother) and yet so extremely courageous in defying to the best of her ability the limits put on her by her country and living behind the veil while in her country - yet outside of her country she can live freely - showing her face to the world - These books have been absolutely fasinating to learn about the mistreatment, rapes of young non-royals, and have shown me just how extremely fortunate we as American women are. What a courageous - brave woman to jepordize her position to have Jean Sasson write her story. - I hope one more book will be written to see Sultant'a perspective of the USA and Saudia Arabia after 9/11/01.
