Book Review: Great book, but problematic plugins in Cubase - **Updated, read at bottom

The concept of this book is fantastic, the way learning audio should be - complete with audio examples! Another thing is, whatever you learn from this book can be carried over to pretty much anything. In other words, what you learn here will apply to other brands of plugins and even hardware units. So, as a result, you don't have to worry about having to use Wave's multi-thousand dollar plugins.
I can't write too much of a review on using this product as... well... I've encounters problems with the plugins. I use Cubase SX3 and loaded all the files to my hard drive. I was able to open the first song listed in the book and start learning. Everything was going great and all the demo plugins were working. Well, I don't know why but at some point along the line I opened a plugin to see it's settings, something that was working fine prior, and all I got was a blank white box - no gui.
Now, no matter what I do (restart Cubase, reboot, reinstall the plugins, etc) I just can not get the plugins to show anything other than an empty white box. I even loaded my Cubase installation on one of my other PC's and get the exact same thing!! I've checked out Waves site and they do indeed list this problem but their solution info is useless - they tell you to disable hyperthreading, which my CPU's don't have, and as far as I know there's no way to shut off cores on a dual or quad-core machine.
Also, you can't e-mail Waves unless you actually own and have registered their plugins. I did some searching on the net and guess what... even registered owners that paid money on their plugins have this issue! Thank god I tried the demo's first.
So now I have a book that I can still learn from, but is now no different from any other book out there. Sure I can turn off the plugins and hear the difference but the book often instructs you to turn off individual settings within the plugin, or to make certain changes to see the effect. Well, I can't do that now as I all get is a blank white box.
I have to say, I can't understand how anyone could drop thousands of dollars on Waves plugins with a debilitating problem such as this. If you don't use Cubase you may be fine, I don't know if this happens on other hosts. But as I said, doing a Google search reveals even people with the full versions of Waves plugins have this problem in Cubase.
**UPDATE - After some additional experimenting I have figured out how to solve the white box (no gui) problem in Cubase. You must go into Device Setup and under VST AudioBay click the "Expert" button. There you will need to uncheck the option for "Multiprocessing". This will make Cubase only use one CPU core on a multicore system. In general use this would be unacceptable to me as you severly lose performance. However, for the sake of learning the content in the book and being able to use the demo plugins this will suffice.
Another note - the demo plugins only last 14 days! So if you have to rely on the demo plugins you need to learn the whole book within two weeks or the plugins won't function.
