Book Reviews of Protect and Defend: A ThrillerBook Review: Not quite good enough Summary: 3 Stars
This is the first time I have read a book by this author. First, I must say, that the proof reading on this book is the worst I have seen, such as words misspelled, missing words, jumbled phrases, and one instance of referring to the wrong character in a back and forth dialog. This sloppy editing process detracts from the story being told. The story is good, but lacks supporting detail. The book could have easily been twice as long. It just seems to me the book was "pumped out", just not enough meat to it! I'll try another book by Mr. Flynn. Maybe I am just too picky. There is nothing like a thriller like "The Charm School" by Nelson DeMille!! I guess I'm spoiled, but I know good books can be written.
Now, in all fairness I must followup by giving the reader a mini-review of another book by Vince Flynn. I have just finished "Term Limits". Now, this book is much, much better. This book has a very captivating story line, has plenty of detail to make it convincing, and the book is well edited (no glaring punctuation or spelling errors). I am pleased to see that Mr. Flynn can write a really good thriller. I realize that I have not "reviewed" the book "Term Limits", however, I simply want the reader to know that it is worth the time to read and far better than "Protect and Defend".
Book Review: Super Hero Role for Mitch Rapp Summary: 4 Stars
Mitch Rapp out thinks, out fights, out shoots, and out negotiates all the bad guys in Protect and Defend. If you enjoy seeing the villains get their just desserts, this is the book for you.
Israeli intelligence has placed an agent inside of Iran's nuclear weapons facility who pulls off a stunning act of sabotage. Naturally, Iran's leaders want to engage Israel and the United States.
Into the breach comes Mitch Rapp who conceives of a plan to use the sabotage to weaken America's enemies in Iran. But executing the plan is easier said than done after Arab terrorists pull a deadly surprise on the CIA. Racing against time, it's all up to Mitch to hold things together.
This story has a lot of suspense and moves forward at a breakneck pace. I found myself racing to reach the end. My heart was pounding while I did.
Naturally, the story is more than a little over the top . . . so you'll find credibility being bent and mangled here and there. But just go along with the fun and you'll have a good time.
Don't make the mistake of looking too closely at the details. Some of them don't work.
If you are concerned about things being done according to Hoyle in your thrillers, this isn't the book for you.
Book Review: Mitch Rapp Rules! Summary: 5 Stars
This book begins in Iran. The United States and Israel are very concerned about Iran gaining nuclear power. With the crazy leadership in Iran the two countries feel a nuclear attack would be imminent. Israel
has a source working in the Isfahan Nuclear Facility. This inside source
who is also a Mossad agent has a plan to destroy the facility. The agent
sets off an explosion that utterly destroys the facility. There is a
nuclear and enviromental disaster left behind.
The Iranians are screaming bloody murder and blaming Israel and the
United States for the destruction of the nuclear facility. CIA director
Irene Kennedy and Iran's intelligence chief Azad Ashani agree to meet in Mosul Iraq and try to resolve their differences. Mitch Rapp accompanies
Kennedy to the meeting. Iran calls upon Hezbollah master terrorist Imad
Mukhtar to kidnap CIA ditector Irene Kennedy. After the kidnapping Iran sinks an Iranian ship and blames the United States. The two countries are perched on the edge of war. Mitch Rapp holds no barriers in his search
for Irene Kennedy.
This is an exciting book from beginning to end. Once again Vince Flynn
has written an outstanding book. Be sure to read it.
Book Review: How Vince Got His Groove Back Summary: 5 Stars
After reading the competent, but uninspired "Act of Treason," I had to wonder if Vince Flynn was losing his edge. I see now, the rut of "Treason" was just a crack in the pavement. Flynn's writing hard and free again, and Mitch Rapp is on the prowl.
After finally disposing of a truly annoying long-time villian at the beginning of the story, Mitch returns to the US to find Iran's secret nuclear facility is in ruins. Iran's president has blamed the US for the attack and demands reparations. Mitch uses this opportunity to hatch a plan to destabilize the Iranians regime by laying the blame on a dissident group.
CIA director Irene Kennedy travels to Iraq for a secret meeting with a moderate Iranian official. After the meeting, she is kidnapped and held under threat of torture. Mitch goes into full action mode to rescue her, regardless of what anyone in Washington has to say about it. He gives new meaning to the phrase, shed blood for your country.
Vince Flynn's character still remain vibrant and alive. One thing is becoming clear: Mitch is cracking. The loss and lifestyle he's suffered is clearly taking a toll on him. Irene is changing as well, and clearly not afraid to get her own hands dirty now too.
Book Review: Mediocre Quality Not Seen in This Series Until Now! Summary: 2 Stars
I started to read this series last year. I like Vince Flynn's character Mitch Rapp. He is a lot like Jack Bauer of 24. However, I am sadly disappointed with Protect and Defend. The book does not live up to its predecessors.
The first thing that bothered me was the amount of typos in the book. It took a lot away from the quality of the previous books. Someone should have proofread this book much better before it was published.
The second item is the lack of character development. The first 100 pages should have had better character development. Instead it felt too much like a history lesson or opinions being served. It was pretty obvious how Vince perceives the current real-life Iranian president since one of the characters had similar traits. In addition, there wasn't much flow to this book.
The third pet peeve that I have was that it wasn't the same Mitch Rapp. It just seems like he lost a bit of skills and insight, which was brought up by another reviewer.
This was defintely NOT Vince's best effort. It seemed rushed and lacked quality compared to other books in this series. I hope the next book in this series regains the quality it had!
