Book Reviews of Protect and Defend: A ThrillerBook Review: Mitch Gets The Job Done, Buts Lack Flair of the Past Summary: 4 Stars
Another great read from Vince Flynn...but something is lacking. More than any of his other books, this one seems a bit forced. It lacks a naturalness about it, and Mitch Rapp seems to lack the flair of past books.
Still a good read and an exciting read..well worth the time and effort, but not up to his usual outstanding plus rating. it just seemed a little forced at times...didn't have the feel that the world might come to an end any minute if Mitch wasn't successful...
Irene Kennedy might have come to an end, but not the world as we know it..and therein may lie the difference.
Great line from Irene near the end as she contemplates the end of her life at the hand of terrorists: "A messy end to an otherwise good life..."
Then, right on time, enter Mitch....the Lone Ranger and Susperman rolled into one. But quite a guy...quite a character...
Book Review: Exciting, but not as exciting as previous installments Summary: 4 Stars
Mitch Rapp is back to his killer instincts and antics in the latest thriller. His first assignment is to take out a corrupt politician that was behind a bombing that took many innocent lives. But then he sets his sights on Iran where anti-American tensions are high because the Isralis bombed Iran's nuclear facility. But he experiences the ultimate nightmare when CIA director Irene Kennedy is kidnapped by the Iranians after an attempt at diplomacy. Rapp must figure out a way to save her life without further triggering an international disaster.
As usual, Mitch Rapp makes for exciting and entertaining reading. As fun as it is, the plot is not as good as previous installments and the action seems a bit like we've been there before. But it is action packed and the pages fly by. A good beach read.
Book Review: The Law of Diminishing Returns ...... Summary: 3 Stars
Flynn veterans who have come to know Mitch Rapp will likely feel let down - again. Flynn has raised the bar so high with earlier works like Memorial Day and Separation of Power, just to name two, that one-day page turners like Act of Treason, and now Protect and Defend, unfortunately, disappoint.
What saves P & D is a strong last 100 pages. The tension builds and today's fiction feels like it could very well be tomorrow's truth. This, in my mind, makes up for the lack of plot complexity that other reviewers allude to.
Note to My Flynn: Slow down. Resist the temptation to turn Mitch Rapp into an annual annuity. Take as long as you need and write something to win back your loyal fans. Until then, I'll hold off preordering your next hardcover.
Book Review: Mitch is BACK! Summary: 4 Stars
Wow! Protect & Defend certainly shows Flynn is BACK! The way Vince educates the reader about the Middle East and the intricacies of Islamic factions is perfect for us "sausage eating" Americans. Vince's uncanny way of predicting world politics, especially in the Middle East, is frightening. The possible and real parallels in Protect & Defend in regards to Iran make it hard to believe this is fiction. In fact, an Iranian media source posted a review calling Protect & Defend "delusional". If Iran is already starting a propaganda war against this book -- then you know it struck a little to close to home.
Mitch is back in every sense of the word, from the bedroom to the executioner's shoes this is one heck of a ride! Enjoy!
Book Review: Politicians take note: Vince Flynn writes it as he sees it Summary: 5 Stars
Protect and Defend is one more Vince Flynn thriller that forces domestic and international politics to the forefront of our psyche. The indomitable Mitch Rapp wields his influence to weaken a fictional, crazy Iranian President, but truth is stranger than fiction in this story. When Irene Kennedy, CIA Director, is abducted by a Hezbollah kingpin conspiring with the Iranian despot anything can and will happen. Rational minds prevail but not before many lives are sacrificed for a purpose no one truly understands. Flynn paints a clear and frightening view of the American involvement in Iraq and the strained relations with Iran. His depiction of corrupt leadership and strife of the common people creates feelings of desperation and hope.
