Book Reviews of Protect and Defend: A Thriller

Book Review: Boilerplate
Summary: 2 Stars

I don't read 'airport books' very often but I picked this one up after seeing the author interviewed on tv. I was hoping for Clancy-style high drama. Unfortunately the author clearly researched a fraction of what he should have in order to create a believable and interesting narrative. The lack of detail and 'insider info' makes the novel drag on. Also, the plot is basic and linear: no twists, no turns, just this then this then this then this then the end. The violence which concludes the novel is gratuitous and feels like the author lacked the creativity to do something unusual so instead he inserted an ugly execution. UGH.

Book Review: Protect and Defend
Summary: 5 Stars

Once again Vince Flynn brings Mitch Rapp into a crisis not of his doing. I love Flynn books and this one is no disappointment. This one like the rest keeps me up late reading it. I finished it in 3 days and read it word for word, not wanting to miss a single small tidbit of Flynn's writing. Mitch is losing some of his punch but the guys got to be close to 50 by now. The intrigue of this book is ever present. Going from one situation to the next and not always being a slam dunk winner every time has Mitch less of an overbearing hero this time. I'm anxiously awaiting the next Flynn book. It'll be another reading all nighter.

Book Review: Another Rapp Thriller
Summary: 4 Stars

Reading Flynn's Mitch Rapp books always heartens me, because I hope our government has a couple of Mitch Flynn types out there who cut through the B.S. and take down the bad guys. And I suspect we do. I found this book one of Flynn's best efforts, one which did not strain credulity too much, like so many spy thrillers do. As usual with a Mitch Rapp book, once you start you can't put it down. The plot is straightforward, laced with fascinating information on our military/intelligence resources, and although the characters are almost caricatures, they work in this book at least. All in all, it's a good, quick read.

Book Review: Very Dissapointing
Summary: 1 Stars

This is the second Vince Flynn book I've read; there won't be a third. Mitch Rapp is one of the shallowest, predictable and uninteresting lead characters I've ever come across. He's the personification of a high school tough guy. I see in Mr. Flynn's biography that he missed an opportunity to attend Marine Corps OCS. It seems that he has created Rapp to capture his lost military manhood. The character has zero believable qualities. He's not likable; he has no followable emotions; he provides no incite. In fact he seems to simply be a vehicle for describing violence at a junior high school level.

Book Review: 4 1/2 Stars
Summary: 4 Stars

In the aftermath of an Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear facilities, CIA director Irene Kennedy and operative Mitch Kelly are dispatched to the Middle East to diffuse Iran's sworn retaliation against the United States but are unaware that a Lebanese terrorist is working with Iran's Supreme Council to sabotage their efforts.
Vince Flynn once again brings one of my favorite characters, Mitch Rapp, back to do what he does best. Kill the bad guys, with no regard for rules when he does. He does plenty of that in this fast-paced story. If you've liked his previous novels, you won't be disappointed in this one.
