Book Reviews of PsyCop: PartnersBook Review: Excellent! Summary: 5 Stars
"PsyCop: Partners" by Jordan Castillo Price is an amazing book. Sure, it was published in the ebook form first but contrary to for example Kayelle Allen's book, this one rocks. It's a sci-fi detective/cop story written from the 1st POV of Vic Bayne, a PsyCop and certified Medium who can hear dead people.
In this book's universe, Mediums are recognized and certified and they work in special squads called the PsyCops. Every PsyCop has a non-psychic partner, the so called Stiff. Together they solve crimes and whatever the Psychic sees or hears, is admittable in court.
As I mentioned, Detective Vic Bayne is such a Psychic. But because he is a Class Five Medium (one of the highest Classes), his abilities can be a real pain in his behind. You see, dead people are rather chatty and they all want to spill their guts and tell Vic how gruesomely they died. And to stop these visions from driving him mad, Vic is usually high as a kite on Auracel, a psy-drug.
In this book, there are two stories there: the first one called "Among the Living", the second one "Criss Cross". The first story begins when Vic's partner of twelve years retires, leaving Vic with a new partner, Lisa... who soon turns out to be a Psychic too and because two Psychics can't work together, they kick her out of the force and Vic must find a new partner. In the middle of a gruesome murder investigation. And with a new love interest too. Vic is lucky that his new boyfriend, Detective Jacob Marks is really understanding and supportive. And while they are trying to build a relationship, someone is horrendously murdering gay men and their souls seem to simply... disappear...
In the second story, Vic's life is turned upside down when he starts not only hearing but seeing the dead people too. And they are not trying just to talk to him, but to grab him too. Which freaks Vic out. And that makes Jacob worried of course. That and the fact that Vic tends to space out and scratch deep Xs into Jacob's skin with his fingernails, pens etc. And while Vic is trying to figure out what's going on, he finds himself right in the middle of a wide-spread conspiracy that seems centered all around him...
This book is a real ride. I had it finished in two days. I just couldn't put it down. The stories are so refreshingly interesting and well developed, just like the characters. It's a detective story first, a gay romance second. There is some sex but it doesn't take over the story itself, it doesn't push the plot into the background. And it was great to read about a loving gay. Price's Jacob doesn't wear rainbow colors but he is not ashamed of what he is, he is not ashamed of being in love with another cop. Which makes me rather happy.
It's obvious that the author paid much attention to details in his character development. Like Vic's obsession with the white color, his addiction to Starbuck coffee, his unwillingness to buy condoms because it would mean that he wants to take his relationship with Jacob a step further, his sloppiness, his inability to spend money on anything... All these details make his character and the supporting stuff come alive.
So, if you like gay detective/sci-fic stories, give this one a try. I will definitely look for more books by Jordan Castillo Price. Five stars out of five!
Summary of PsyCop: PartnersFeaturing two PsyCop novels, Among the Living and Criss Cross, this volume will leave you on the edge of you seat, wanting more! In Among the Living, Victor is a PsyCop, also known as a member of the Paranormal Investigation team. He's not popular with the living, as most people consider him a little odd, but the ghosts of violent crimes can't wait to tell him all about their deaths. His new case pairs him with Jacob, a non-psychic who works in sex crimes. Victor and Jacob have a history, and as they and work together to solve a set of serial crimes, they begin to explore the possibilities of a future. The case is like nothing they've ever experienced, and soon Victor finds that he's the only one who can solve the crime, and save Jacob's life. If he's not too late. In Criss Cross, Vic figures life is pretty good. He's got his lover, Jacob. He's got some time off to go fishing, and his new partner in the Paranormal Investigation Team buys the coffee. Naturally, nothing that good can last. When Vic starts to see ghosts everywhere, things go very wrong, resulting in a trip to his doctor, who says he's got problems. Vic's friends tell Jacob he has to leave for Vic to get better, sex is starting to get dangerous, and Vic's abilities are getting out of hand. Can he and Jacob figure out what's happening in time to save Vic from becoming a pawn in a dangerous game?
