Book Reviews of Raise Your Voice 2nd editionBook Review: Be very, VERY careful Summary: 1 Stars
Here's the skinny of it:
I've trashed my voice doing the exercises in this book. I can't even hit the high notes I used to anymore. I'm contemplating going for vocal therapy. I have gigs to perform. I have totally abandoned doing anything from this book in desperation to get my voice back.
Now the long of it:
I'm not a beginning singer who never sung before and all of a sudden tried to hit the high notes without properly warming up. I sing regularly in a rock / variety band and been singing for over 20 years. People have told me I have a powerful voice (I surmise that if I didn't sound good, they wouldn't have bothered calling me back for gigs). I've successfully and dilligently trained my voice using "real" vocal exercises (CDs of Ariella Vacarino and Bob Tasman-Smith). However, I don't do it for living, I have a day job.
I got this book because I just wanted to see if I could increase my range some so that I can perhaps add songs to my repetoire that are a bit out of my range. This was a BAD idea.
Also, given the number of advertizements in this book (almost like info-mercials), for me, reading this book, was a grand waste of my valuable time and effort (and money). From this personal experience, I'm now stunned and in total awe and amazement how this book got five star reviews from so many people and even in the previous version of this book. Why didn't it work for me? Perhaps my voice has already reached it's high limit? Maybe I need to even more warm-ups? Maybe I caught a bad virus? Are all the reviews honest??
Well, as you can see, I'm totally confused. Still, I am trying to give the book benefit of the doubt. If all these people found this book helpful and are really, truly now singing higher notes, well, more power to them. If you decide to get this book, I hope you have success too.
However, I'm sorry to say, for my case, after I've read and re-read following all the instructions carefully in this book to the best of my ability, honestly, it didn't work for me. Instead, I've suffered damaging regression. I had to let you all know. So proceed with caution. Too, all other advice in the book, you can get elsewhere with more scholarly work (I'm thinking Richard Miller books). In conclusion, training with a experienced teacher is perhaps the best choice for me. Meanwhile, when I hopefully get my voice back, I'll stay happy with my range and won't try to raise my voice again.
Book Review: This book is my gift to all singers Summary: 5 Stars
I am the author of this book. This book is the result of 20 years of studying voice, finding faults within my own voice and learning how to correct them through the guidance of vocal health, strength training, breath development and secrets given to me by some of the most amazing singers on the planet.
Raise Your Voice 2nd Edition is a labour of love; I strived to bring together as many tips, tricks and tactics created by pro singers and coaches around the world into one book. The book is based on visualization and hard work to extend your vocal range, power, quality and stamina in minimal time. I didn't want you to have to spend years like I had.
It covers vocal health, vocal anatomy, the speaking voice, overcoming fear, staying in shape, being your best on stage and mastering the recording studio. My Vocal Stress Release Program and Isolation Method will help you minimize vocal stress and get you singing higher, louder, longer or stronger than you've ever imagined.
And if you want to learn things like the true way to scream or add grit without blowing out your voice, I have found the secret...and if you want to shatter glass with your voice, like I did on MythBusters, well, I tell you how I've shatttered over 150 of em, so you can too!
Raise Your Voice 2nd Edition also comes with over 9 hours of instructional audio & videos, downloadable exercises and a message board to discuss the techniques with fellow RYV users, all available through the Members section of the book. So, you are getting way nore than just 460 pages of vocal information. I did this out of my passion for teaching, so that each and every one of you had more than just the book to guide you through my system.
This book is endorsed by bands like Alter Bridge, RA, Dream Theater, Nitro, TNT, Symphony X, Kill Hannah, Saliva, Journey and many more as well as vocal coaches like Brett Manning, Jeannie Deva, Melissa Cross, Mark Baxter, Thomas Appel, Dena Murray, Cara Mastrey, etc. So if you want to sing rock, metal or anything modern including Blues, pop and other styles, the techniques in this book can lead you in that direction. I hope this book helps make each and every one of you a singing machine!!!
Book Review: My "Vocal bible" Summary: 5 Stars
Jamie Vendera's "Raise Your Voice" 2nd edition my "vocal bible", for vocalists is the most comprehensive book for vocalists I have found. While I have read a number of other books to regain my vocal abilities, Raise Your Voice is the best by far. The others I have read were either very basic, "dry", or otherwise non-productive for my particular needs.
RYV is so comprehensive, I could spend hours going into the details. RYV covers everything a vocalist needs, whether a beginner, intermediate, advanced, or even professional singers who have damaged or "lost" their voices due to improper technique, or otherwise "bad habits".
RYV covers everything from proper breathing techniques, vocal health, increasing octave range, proper warm up, "developing style", a chapter for "Hard Rockers Only", and as I've stated, many topics too numerous to mention in this review.
Jamie has spent countless hours, thousand of dollars, and years of research to share his knowledge and expertise with YOU, the vocalist who desires to become your best !
This book is not only about Jamie, but also includes excerpts and tips from some of the best vocal instructors, rock stars and other professional singers, and he is highly endorsed by them.
RYV is not only for rock singers, but also for singers of pop, metal, blues, etc.
From a personal standpoint, I was in a number of bands as a vocalist and keyboardist at a younger age. Due to a cervical spinal injury, and five spinal surgeries later, I was told by a number of my doctors that I would never sing again. RYV has changed that, and I am proud to announce that with dedication and commitment, I am singing better than ever, and have increased my octave range significantly. I do not know where I would be today without RYV.
From my personal experience with RYV, I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone serious enough about their vocal instrument.
Definitely a FIVE STAR RATING and MORE if it were possible.
Highly recommended to all vocalists.
Thank You, Jamie !!!
Book Review: Unlike other coaches, Jaime knows what he's talking about Summary: 5 Stars
Before reading this book I had been trying for about a year and a half to learn to sing with limited success. I tried the material of several of the popular online vocal coaches with very limited success. Although I improved marginally with new information from different coaches, I never got even close to where I wanted to be. I just didn't like the way my voice sounded even when I hit the pitches perfectly - it was just lacking quality of tone (hint: if you don't know anything about singing, this is the most important aspect of singing). The solution was Jaime's Isolation Method which was completely different from anything that I had ever done. Jaime's approach is so much different and more effective that it's almost like he's the only coach that actually understands how singing works and how to improve the voice. The vast majority of what I had done involved scales with lip rolls and various vowel sounds which were almost completely inadequate in improving tone. Sure, they were effective at improving my range but who wants to listen to someone sing really high notes really badly? By the way, for those interested in improving range, the Isolation Method is actually more effective at achieving that goal than these other methods.
This book is miles above anything else you're going to read or watch and it covers every single aspect of singing. Another important aspect is visualization and sensation and Jaime describes that in great detail (When reading the book, it might sound like baloney at first but when you start to feel some of the things that he describes you will understand why this is important and learn how to aim for certain sensations that are most effective for you).
If you want more reason to buy, look at the reviews for this book. My review will make a total of 24, 22 of which are 5 star ratings. You won't find anything close to this on Amazon for vocal instruction. I know because I checked just about all of the popular books before I bought this. It works
Book Review: Best training for singers available! Summary: 5 Stars
I know this review will sound like paid ad, but this book is so useful that it just can't sound like anything else :)
Well I tried everything. Not sure how many trainings for singers or courses I tried, books, instructional DVDs, online lessons etc etc... some of them worked a bit, I found some improvements in my singing but not too much, and with some products not at all. I learned something from those but I never had such huge success like with Raise Your Voice!
Jaime Vendera, author of this book, is the guy you saw in MythBusters shattering a wine glass with his voice. Singing techniques he teaches are used by great singers such as Myles Kennedy (Alter Bridge), James Labrie (Dream Theater), Matt Devine (Kill Hannah), Kevin Rudolf and more... This already tells you enough!
This book has it all. It contains everything a singer should know. It's like a Bible for singers, because it's not the book you will read once and then never open it again, you will always go back to it to learn more and more. It will learn you proper techniques to strengthen you voice, it will help you maintenance it, keep it healthy, and most importantly you will learn correct technique that can be applied to any music style (unlike most of other books or products) - breathing, proper support, singing higher pitches, singing with more volume and power. It will teach you "Power Push" which is a technique used by many world know artists (some of them I mentioned above) which will give you the possibility to sing with more power and resonance in higher pitches like you couldn't before - using that technique you will gain power and hit notes you thought you will never be able to do, and it's something that you wont find in many other books or courses, so be sure to not miss it.
Be sure to check Raise Your Voice, it's inexpensive, you get it for less then a price of one singing lesson, so you got nothing to lose to try it, and will surely benefit from it. I did - A LOT!
