Book Reviews of Real Simple: Meals Made Easy (Real Simple S.)

Book Review: Go From Page To Page Day By Day
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this book for my parents who are older and my mother is handicapped to the point now that my father is cooking! (Uh oh...) He loves this book. It is easy and the recipes are good. He especially likes it because each recipe typically does not have a long list of ingredients and they are very easy to do. He does not like using my mother's cook books or recipes as he says there are too many ingredients and too much preparation; not the case with these recipes. Someone mentioned it has too many fish recipes in it. We like that, but I do not think there are too many. You could easily just go from one page to the next day by day for your meal planning; that is what my Dad is doing! He likes it so much he got one for me too!

Book Review: Good but not as good as the newer Real Simple cookbook.
Summary: 3 Stars

I am a real simple addict. This is mainly because the recipes from the magazine and the realsimple.com are healthy, easy to make, and always call for fresh ingredients.
Cons: Although this book has some wonderful staples, the recipes are not nearly as healthy as the second cookbook, "Easy, delicous meals." Not to mention, there is not a calorie listing in this cookbook which makes it difficult for those of us who are trying to be concious of healthy cooking.
Pros: Delicous recipes. The book is also separated into great categories, my favorite being " no shop meals."

Overall, a good cook book that I will use and I would recommend adding to your cookbook collection.

Book Review: Simple Recipes for a Bajan
Summary: 4 Stars

I must admit (somewhat embarrassingly) that I bought the book more for the pictures that the recipes. I am a subscriber to Real Simple and I thought that it would be a nice thing to have. However, I must admit that I have tried about 8 -10 of the recipes in the book and I must say that they are truly "real simple". The produce was easily accessible, the instructions were extremely clear and my efforts not only looked like the pictures, but tasted fantastic. I would encourage anyone to try this recipe - even if you don't use it, just get it for the pics. They are gorgeous!

Book Review: Not Real Simple's Best
Summary: 3 Stars

I have been subscribing to Real Simple for a few years and was disappointed that the recipes and tips weren't among their best. The "meals" weren't well balanced either; not enough vegetables or fruits included. I suppose you should serve a side salad with many of the main courses in order to complete (and lighten) the meal. I would not recommend this book for experienced cooks or dieters (ground beef and french fry casserole?). I do recommend the magazine for better recipes, balance, and clever tips.

Book Review: I give it a rousing "OK", and a word of caution
Summary: 3 Stars

The layout of the book is fine. The photographs of the completed dishes are fine. The selection is a bit fish-heavy for my taste. To be honest, I've only made one thing in this book: macaroni and cheese. I should have realized something was amiss when the recipe called for six (6) cups of milk. I stopped at five, and the end result was macaroni and milk soup, albeit with a crunchy topping. If that's a typo, it's a biggie, and it makes me wonder about the validity of the rest of the recipes.
